Job summary

CTL Engineering is seeking Technicians for Construction Inspection Services on ODOT transportation projects. This role blends fieldwork and laboratory testing with some office tasks, primarily in the Cleveland/northern Ohio region, with travel within that area typical.

You will work under a Department Manager and may supervise direct reports or projects. A stipend for vehicle use or a company take-home vehicle will be provided based on assignment.

CTL Engineering is hiring Technicians for Construction Inspection Services for ODOT (Transportation) projects. We provide civil/site design, land surveying, environmental, geotechnical, construction administration & inspection, accident reconstruction, roofing/building envelope, AV system design, troubleshooting & installation, transportation design (bridge/roadway), and specialized testing services to the construction industry. We are looking for Technicians who will play a key role in all aspects of construction inspection services and quality control for state (ODOT), county, and local clients. You’ll be involved in the testing and inspection aspects of a wide variety of construction projects including those primarily in the roadway/bridge arena and also could include water/wastewater, aviation, commercial, and municipal utility/infrastructure sectors. Highlights

Responsibilities

• Perform construction engineering technician (inspection) services related to earthwork, concrete, asphalt and utility construction for ODOT, municipalities, and private sector clients.
• Perform engineering and construction field testing primarily roadway/bridge projects.
• Inspect and report on specific aspects of construction works in progress, such as concrete pours, rebar placement, pipe replacements as examples.
• Inspect and sample construction materials.
• Perform computations with formulas, plot data and draw simple curves and graphs.
• Assist Engineers in field during soil and materials investigations.
• Ensure that job site tests/observations, including quality control, quality assurance, and verification are performed in accordance with the standard test/observation methods, project specifications and other contract documents.
• Perform laboratory testing and observation of soils, concrete and asphalt.
• Perform inspections for construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with state specifications, plans, and/or proposals for primarily roadway work, pavement.
• Verify plan quantities and calculations as bid plans.
• Prepare and maintain project records and reports.
• May assist with notifying the Contractor or the Project Engineer of non-conforming work.

Minimum Qualifications

• 0-2+ years experience in construction inspection and testing.
  • New trade school/ bachelor’s graduates are encouraged to apply – start a career!
• Familiarity with highway construction specifications and previous field experience is a plus/not required.
• Previous experience working for a testing company a plus.
• Experience with concrete, asphalt, earthwork, and utility construction engineering services and inspection/testing is nice to have but not required.
• Experience with field and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, masonry, structural steel and fireproofing, etc. is a plus but not required.
• Preferred certifications: ACI Grade I, DOT Asphalt Tech, NICET Level II Soils, ICC Special inspections and/or CWI/NDT inspectors – good to have but not required.
• Must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
