Job summary

Kids for the Future in Lafayette, LA is seeking a diesel truck mechanic to diagnose, repair, and overhaul diesel engines and related systems. You will use hand and power tools, read gauges, and perform routine maintenance to keep trucks and equipment in top condition.

Responsibilities include inspecting engines, replacing parts, and ensuring safety standards. CDL with air brake endorsement is preferred, with experience in medium/heavy duty trucks highly desirable.

Qualifications

  • Experience with medium/heavy duty trucks and diesel engines preferred.
  • Must be able to read and follow technical manuals and schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul diesel engines and related systems.
  • Use hand and power tools to service equipment and read gauges to diagnose faults.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to equipment to identify malfunctions.
  • Raise heavy parts using jacks or hoists and ensure safety devices are functional.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes and lubrication.
  • Disassemble and reassemble engines, pumps, transmissions, and other components.
  • Align front ends and inspect brake systems and wheel bearings.

Description
Position summary

Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul trucks, buses, and all types of diesel engines. Include mechanics working primarily with automobile diesel engines.

Responsibilities

While responsibilities may vary, the following are general duties that may or may not be required of a particular employee in this position.

  • Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
  • Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
  • Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
  • Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
  • Align front ends and suspension systems.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
Warranty
  • Ensures all warranty parts are clean, lube drained (if required), tagged and signed off on work order by parts department personnel
  • Obtains all pertinent information for the proper processing of warranty claims (such as serial numbers, history reports, vendor specific electronic downloads) as needed
  • Maintains ability to access and navigate International ISIS system and/or vendor web-based sites
  • Complete and maintain required International Training
  • Attend product training as deemed necessary by Service Manager

Knowledge/Skills/Ability
  • Good knowledge of medium/heavy duty truck mechanical and electrical systems. Good problem solving skills., Ability to read and write, computer literate preferred, valid class B CDL w/air brake, ability to lift heavy objects and work within truck service shop environment, must be a team player with a strong sense of commitment to the customer.
  • Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Troubleshooting - Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Repairing - Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
  • Installation - Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

Education/Experience

Post-Secondary Certificate - awarded for training completed after high school (for example, in Personnel Services, Engineering-related Technologies, Vocational Home Economics, Construction Trades, Mechanics and Repairers, Precision Production Trades); Over 2 years, up to and including 4 years

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Minimum two years’ experience in medium/heavy duty truck industry, or graduate of a diesel technology program.

Physical Requirements

This position will require –

Ability to lift 35-lbs above head.
