Job summary

CBS News Chicago is seeking an experienced news production professional with ENG, studio and transmission expertise. The ideal candidate will handle field and studio work, support social media and CBSChicago.com, and adapt to shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays. Per diem position with benefits described in the posting. Must have strong editing skills with Edius and a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Five years’ experience as a photographer, editor and studio technician in preferably in a top 30 market.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media production or similar field preferred or related experience.
  • Familiarity with Chicago area, desirable
  • Strong non-linear editing background, including Edius
  • Valid Illinois drivers license
  • Drone ENG experience with FAA Part 107 certification a plus
  • IBEW Local 1220 Per Diem Technician Position

Responsibilities

  • ENG news and studio production expertise with Sony HD cameras, Edius editing, jib, teleprompter and lighting.
  • Safely operating company vehicles including microwave vans and trucks on long drives in all weather.
  • Contribute to editorial process with story ideas and production strategy.
  • Ensure daily show production deadlines are met.
  • Protect news equipment from theft and damage.
  • Flexibility with shifts including nights, weekends, early mornings and holidays.
  • Fill shifts based on production needs including vacation relief.

Job description

CBS News Chicago is in search of a skilled and experienced news production talent. Ideal candidate will have an expert understanding of local news production. Candidate will have both field, studio and transmission experience. Will support broadcast and multi-platform social media strategies and cbschicago.com.
This is a per diem position.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and experience with all aspects of ENG news and studio production, including Sony HD cameras, Edius non-linear editing, jib, teleprompter and lighting.
  • Safely operating company vehicles, including microwave equipped vans and trucks, on potentially long drives in all weather conditions.
  • Bring creativity and imagination to the job of broadcast storytelling
  • Ensure that all daily show production deadlines are met
  • Take extreme care to ensure that news equipment is protected from theft and damage.
  • Consistently contribute to editorial process in team environment with story ideas and attention to production strategy.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • All shifts including, nights, weekends, early mornings and holidays.
  • Will fill shifts based on production needs including vacation relief.

Requirements Of Cbs News Chicago Technicians
  • Capable of potentially lengthy, physically and emotionally stressful assignments in the field. The unpredictable nature of news assignments often requires extending scheduled shifts on short notice.
  • Physical ability to carry and manipulate at least 75lbs of gear, set up and breakdown broadcast production equipment, usually alone, and on tight deadlines. Activities include driving and positioning large, microwave equipped vans; operating and orienting retractable antenna masts within strict safety guidelines; executing long cable runs of perhaps several hundred feet; carrying, setting up and operating tripods, video cameras and batteries.
  • Capable of driving company vehicles in all conditions and on potentially long (3 to 4 hour) drives to and from assignments.
  • Flexibility regarding assigned work schedule, including the potential of regular shifts that involve weekends and/or late nights and/or overnights.
  • Consistent ability to communicate reliably and credibly, especially about information related to safety issues in the field. Reliably communicate details associated with editorial content of stories and logistical information associated with production deadlines. The ability to gather important information at various news locations.
  • Ability to deal with complex logistical situations in the field including the ability to compete for position with other news media, cope with interference from the public and inter-act with third-parties such as fire, police and security personnel.
  • Consistent ability to interact with the co-workers and the public in a calm and professional manner.
  • Candidate can adapt to writing content for air. Will contribute to social media strategies and multimedia journalism.

Hiring Salary Range: $67.85 - $67.85

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
