Job summary

Credence is seeking a Technical Writing Assistant to support CBP with policy documentation lifecycle in a fully remote role. The candidate should manage a large policy library, ensure accurate citations, formatting, and routing through review cycles for government stakeholders.

Requirements include a Bachelor's in Technical Writing, 5+ years in technical writing/editing, and advanced MS Word/Adobe Acrobat Pro skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant technical writing/editing experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word (styles, templates, cross-references, tables of contents, track changes) and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint to create workflows and org charts.
  • Strong ability to maintain a disciplined document/library with version control.
  • Experience conducting independent research and summarizing findings clearly.
  • Excellent proofreading and copy-editing skills with strong grammar and style awareness.
  • Stakeholder engagement and service-oriented response to research requests.
  • Ability to work in Teams and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the CBP policy library, including intake, indexing, version control, and archiving.
  • Provide responsive policy search and research support to the SOD.
  • Conduct independent research to support policy development.
  • Validate references and authorities cited in policy documents.
  • Create and track routing sheets through review, concurrence, and approval.
  • Assist with CBP policy web content management and posting.
  • Format documents to CBP-approved standards using Word/Adobe tools.
  • Create PowerPoint presentations showing workflows and org charts.
  • Proofread and copy-edit directives, handbooks, SOPs, memos and briefs.
  • Maintain knowledge of CBP guidelines, regulations, and handbooks.

The ideal candidate should possess exceptional organizational skills and an eye for detail that catches what others miss. Success in this role requires precision over volume — accurate citations, clean formatting, disciplined version control, and clear tracking of where every document stands in the review and approval cycle. The Technical Writing Assistant serves as the day-to-day steward of a large policy library, fielding research requests from government stakeholders, validating the authorities that underpin existing policy, formatting documents to CBP-approved standards, and shepherding materials through routing and concurrence.

Requirements
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the duties listed below:
  • Must be able to maintain the CBP policy library, including document intake, indexing, version control, and archiving of superseded material
  • Will be responsible for providing responsive customer service to the Security Operations Division (SOD) on policy searches and research inquiries
  • Will conduct independent research and analysis to support the development of new policy
  • Will validate references and authorities cited in policy documents and determine whether the scope of expiring policy remains relevant, requires revision, or should be sunset
  • Will create and track routing sheets, monitoring each document action through review, concurrence, and final approval
  • Will assist with web content management, including posting, updating, and organizing policy content on CBP sites
  • Must have the ability to utilize Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro to format documents into CBP-approved formats, applying styles, templates, cross-references, tables of contents, bookmarking, and accessibility remediation
  • Must have demonstrated experience utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint to create presentations depicting workflows, processes, and organizational charts
  • Must have prior experience proofreading and copy editing a wide range of materials, including directives, handbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), memoranda, and briefing products
  • Must maintain working knowledge of a broad range of current guidelines, regulations, policies, and handbooks pertinent to CBP activities
Qualifications:
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing or a related field is required
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant technical writing/editing experience
  • Must have advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word (styles, templates, cross-references, tables of contents, track changes) and Adobe Acrobat Pro (PDF creation, bookmarking, form fields, Section 508 accessibility)
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, including building workflow diagrams and organizational charts
  • Must have demonstrated experience maintaining a document, policy, or knowledge library with disciplined version control
  • Must be able to conduct independent research, validate source authorities, and summarize findings clearly
  • Must have exceptional proofreading and copy-editing skills, with strong command of grammar, usage, and a recognized style guide
  • Must be stakeholder engaging, with a service-oriented approach to fielding research requests
  • Must be able to work well within Teams
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive data
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple concurrent document actions in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fully remote setting
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a favorable CBP suitability determination
Preferred:
  • Prior experience supporting CBP, DHS, or another federal law enforcement or homeland security organization
  • Familiarity with federal policy document types (directives, handbooks, musters, SOPs, memoranda) and agency policy lifecycle and review processes
  • Experience with routing sheets, staffing packages, or comparable government concurrence workflows
  • Experience with SharePoint and web content management systems
  • Working knowledge of Section 508 / WCAG accessibility requirements for documents and web content
  • Experience researching statutory and regulatory authorities (U.S. Code, CFR, executive orders, agency directives
Salary Range

$80,000.00 to $90,000.00 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on the selected candidate's experience, education, skills, and overall qualifications.
