Job summary

Leonardo DRS in Germantown, MD is seeking an experienced Principal Technical Writer IV to develop clear, accurate, and highly technical documentation for radar and defense technology. This on-site role collaborates with engineers and production teams to deliver manuals, procedures, and related materials that meet strict standards.

The role requires at least eight years of technical writing experience, a related bachelor's degree, and strong proficiency with Word and desktop publishing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in English, technical communication, engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least eight years of relevant technical writing, technical publication, or documentation-development experience.
• Experience creating complex technical documentation for equipment, systems, manufacturing processes, or engineering products.
• Advanced proficiency with desktop publishing and document-development tools, particularly Microsoft Word.
• Strong ability to interpret and synthesize technical drawings, specifications, product data, operating procedures, and engineering information.
• Demonstrated ability to work directly with engineers, manufacturing personnel, and other subject-matter experts to gather, validate, and communicate complex information.
• Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, organization, and document-control skills.

Responsibilities

• Write, revise, and maintain complex technical documentation, including manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, and other product-support materials.
• Organize technical content into clear, concise documentation following established standards.
• Interview engineers, production personnel, and other SMEs to understand product technologies and procedures.
• Review drawings, specifications, and technical data to develop accurate content.
• Observe production and development activities to document procedures and equipment details.
• Analyze product changes to identify documentation impacts and develop new materials as needed.
• Edit, standardize, and improve documentation prepared by others.
