Job summary

US Ocean seeks a Technical Superintendent to lead shipyard repair oversight, manage budgets, and coordinate technical aspects for assigned vessels. You will ensure safe, compliant, and cost-efficient operations while guiding vessel maintenance and performance tracking.

The role requires offshore and on-site work with travel as needed, reporting to the Senior Director of Technical Services. A maritime engineering background and a valid TWIC are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering and/or Naval Architecture or equivalent experience.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport and TWIC.
• Experience sailing on ocean-going vessels as a Licensed Engineering Officer or shoreside technical role.
• Ability to travel as necessary for projects.

Responsibilities

• Oversee shipyard repairs, monitor budgets, and settle related invoices.
• Manage the technical aspects of assigned vessels and act as primary contact for technical coordination.

Position Title: Technical Superintendent

Reports To: Senior Director, Technical Services

Schedule: Monday through Friday business hours and additional as required

Location: Tampa, FL - on site preferred (remote considered)

Position Supervised: Ship staff and contractors as required

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Responsible for shipyard repair oversight, including monitoring repair work and associated budget and negotiating and settling related invoices.
• Responsible for the technical aspects of assigned vessels.
• Acts as the primary contact for technical coordination for assigned vessels ensuring operational and mechanical soundness of company vessels.
• Assists in ensuring vessels are operated in a safe efficient and cost-effective manner, ensuring compliance with class and statutory compliance regulations while protecting asset value.
• Assists in providing day-to-day technical support and guidance to assigned vessels.
• Monitors vessel performance and ensure follow-up action.
• Approves ship purchase requisitions, codes invoices and receipts, as necessary while overseeing the management of vessel repair and maintenance budgets and operating expenditures in coordination with the relevant Marine Superintendents and Operations teams
• Assists in the overall management of repair and maintenance for assigned vessels, including routine voyage repairs, regulatory surveys, dry docking shipyard events, emergencies, casualties, and modifications.
• Promotes a professional relationship with the officers and crew.
• Set clear goals and expectations and coach and develop Chief Engineers in line with Competence and Performance Management objectives.
• Participate in interviews and make recommendations regarding new hires and promotions.
• Carries out regular vessel visits to confirm conditions and compliance with US Ocean Fleet Management Operating Standards and provide Vessel Condition reports.
• Monitors and ensures maintenance software (NSE) are utilized properly, verifying repairs and maintenance are properly reported and standard jobs are followed.
• Remains abreast of and ensure compliance with applicable flag state and class standards, international regulations, and audit results.
• Is the primary focal point for port states, Class, terminals, USCG, etc. and assists and participates in Incident investigations.
• Manages technical files, including service reports, machinery history, and regulatory-required documentation.
• Supervises the Assistant Superintendent(s).

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering and/or Naval Architecture or equivalent experience.
• Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a valid passport and TWIC.
• Experience sailing on ocean going vessels as a Licensed Engineering Officer and/or working in a shoreside technical role.
• Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to travel as necessary for projects.
• Ability to work well with others, self-starter, proactive, flexible with work schedule, well organized.
• Technical asset management, analytical problem solving, time management, project management and decision-making or skills.
• Knowledge of technical operations for the vessel types managed.
• Knowledge of propulsion plant onboard vessels managed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Education: Maritime Academy USCG Unlimited Second Engineer’s license or greater.
• Skills/Software: Previous shoreside experience in a similar role a plus.
• Working experience with Microsoft products such as: Excel Word Outlook.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• This position works in a hybrid environment that splits time between the office and the field.
• Office work involves standard computer use, reviewing technical documentation, budgeting, and coordinating with vessel crews, vendors, and shore-side staff.
• Field work includes regular attendance aboard vessels in port and at sea, as well as at shipyards, repair facilities, and other industrial sites.
• Shipboard and shipyard conditions can involve exposure to noise, heat, cold, weather, fumes, and moving machinery, along with climbing vertical ladders and gangways, working at heights, and entering confined spaces such as tanks, voids, and machinery spaces.
• The Superintendent must follow site safety rules and wear required personal protective equipment.
• Travel is required, both domestic and international, sometimes on short notice and for extended periods during dry dockings or emergent repairs.
