Job description

The Technical Services Training Manager at Vector is responsible for developing, delivering, and continuously improving technical training programs related to industrial instrumentation, process control systems, and field device technologies. This role equips technicians, engineers, operators, and maintenance personnel with the advanced knowledge and practical skills required to install, calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain, and optimize instrumentation systems in industrial environments.


The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in instrumentation and controls with strong instructional skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to translate complex concepts into effective learning experiences for adult learners.


PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Design, develop, and deliver advanced training programs on instrumentation, calibration, process measurement, control systems, and troubleshooting.

  • Conduct classroom, field, workshop, and hands-on lab training for technicians, maintenance teams, engineers, and operations personnel.

  • Create training materials including lesson plans, presentations, workbooks, practical exercises, job aids, assessments, and competency checklists.

  • Customize training content to align with site equipment, operational processes, applicable standards, and learner skill levels.

  • Facilitate both in-person and virtual training sessions as needed.


TECHNICAL SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTISE


  • Provide advanced instruction on instrumentation topics such as:

  • Pressure, temperature, flow, and level measurement

  • Control valves and valve positioners

  • PLCs, DCS, and SCADA interfaces

  • Loop checking and commissioning

  • HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, and other communication protocols

  • Process control fundamentals and tuning concepts

  • Electrical and pneumatic instrumentation systems

  • Installation, wiring, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance

  • Demonstrate proper use of testing equipment.

  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis of instrumentation and control issues.


COMPETENCY MANAGEMENT


  • Assess trainee knowledge and practical skill levels through written tests, observation, and hands-on evaluations.

  • Identify training gaps and recommend development plans for technicians and operations personnel.

  • Maintain records of training completion, competencies, qualifications, and certifications.

  • Partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams to ensure workforce readiness and technical capability.


CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT


  • Evaluate training effectiveness through feedback, performance metrics, skills assessments, and operational outcomes.

  • Update curriculum to reflect changes in technology, instrumentation standards, equipment upgrades, and business needs.

  • Recommend improvements to technical onboarding, certification pathways, and workforce development programs.

  • Serve as a technical mentor and coach for less experienced technicians and trainers.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE


  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent training in Instrumentation, Electrical Technology, Industrial Technology, Process Control, or a related field required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related discipline preferred.

  • 10+ years of hands‑on experience in industrial instrumentation, controls, maintenance, commissioning, or process automation.

  • Prior experience delivering technical training, coaching, mentoring, or leading skill development programs preferred.

  • Experience in industrial environments such as oil and gas, chemical, power generation, manufacturing, water/wastewater, or other process industries strongly preferred.


QUALIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS


  • Strong understanding of:

  • Industrial measurement devices and transmitters

  • Calibration procedures and standards

  • Control systems and automation architecture

  • P\\&IDs, loop drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals

  • Instrument troubleshooting and diagnostic practices

  • Maintenance planning and reliability principles

  • Familiarity with major instrumentation manufacturers and control platforms preferred.


SKILLS & COMPETENCIES


  • Excellent verbal presentation and instructional delivery skills

  • Strong written communication and technical documentation abilities

  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to varied audiences

  • Strong facilitation, coaching, and adult learning skills

  • Effective troubleshooting and problem‑solving capability

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and learning/training systems

  • Ability to build credibility with technicians, engineers, and operations leaders


PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS:


  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP)

  • OEM or manufacturer certifications in instrumentation or automation systems

  • Train-the-Trainer certification

  • Relevant safety certifications (e.g., NFPA 70E awareness, OSHA‐related training)
