Technical Service Manager – Overhead Cranes

Role Overview
The Technical Service Manager leads frontline technical execution, workforce development, and service delivery for overhead crane systems. This role bridges hands-on field expertise and operational leadership by mentoring service technicians, solving advanced electro-mechanical issues, and partnering with operations to safeguard project margins and customer satisfaction.
Core Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Field Coaching
- Provide hands-on mentorship and technical guidance to field technicians during complex diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures.
- Deliver continuous field-level training to elevate team capability in electrical, mechanical, and crane automation systems.
- Lead by example on customer job sites, joining the field rotation and responding to urgent service demands or after-hours emergencies as needed.
Service Execution & Margin Protection
- Collaborate with the Service Manager to dispatch and align technicians with job requirements based on technical competency.
- Monitor job-site execution against planned labor hours and material budgets to protect gross margins; partner with estimators to adjust scopes when unexpected field conditions arise.
- Assist in generating accurate quotes, defining work scopes, and resolving inspection deficiencies for repair and modernization projects.
Modernization & Project Management
- Perform site assessments to define technical requirements for system upgrades, retrofits, and component modernizations.
- Partner with clients to finalize scopes of work, secure purchase orders, and draft clear work orders for field execution.
- Direct project turnover to field technicians, ensuring clear expectations regarding site safety, technical scope, and project timelines.
Safety, Compliance & Operational Quality
- Champion a strict zero-harm culture by enforcing OSHA standards, relevant industry codes (e.g., CMAA/ASME/ANSI), and internal environmental health and safety policies.
- Lead proactive job hazard assessments, prompt incident/near-miss reporting, and job-site safety reviews.
- Standardize service procedures to improve first-time fix rates, operational consistency, and customer equipment uptime.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of hands-on overhead crane service and maintenance experience, including at least 3 years in a technical lead, supervisory, or service management role.
- Technical Mastery: Deep working knowledge of overhead crane systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor controls, radio control systems, hoists, and power distribution.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Solid foundation in crane inspection, maintenance, and testing standards (ASME B30, CMAA, OSHA, and regional equivalents).
- Education: Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent trade credentials in Electro-Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Business & Communication Skills: Proven ability to manage customer relationships, write clear scopes of work, and communicate effectively across field crews and executive leadership.
- Technical Tools: Proficiency with MS Office Suite and digital work-order/field-service management systems.
- Logistics: Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record; flexibility to travel locally and participate in an on-call rotation for emergency service calls.
