Position Overview

A leading advanced manufacturing organization is seeking a Technical Project Manager – Engineered Equipment to lead complex, customer-specific equipment projects and oversee a global field service team.

This is a highly visible role combining technical project management, engineering coordination, customer management, and team leadership. The successful candidate will take ownership of custom engineered systems from initial customer requirements through design, procurement, manufacturing, testing, installation, commissioning, and final handoff.

The organization designs and manufactures sophisticated equipment used within advanced industrial and aerospace manufacturing environments. Projects are highly customized and may include complete equipment systems, automation, controls, ventilation, instrumentation, safety systems, and supporting infrastructure.

This individual will serve as the primary link between the customer and internal engineering, production, purchasing, vendors, and field service teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own complex custom equipment projects from initial scope and quotation through final installation and commissioning.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining project schedules, budgets, milestones, and customer commitments.
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing engineering teams throughout the design and build process.
  • Translate customer requirements into actionable engineering and project deliverables.
  • Serve as a primary technical and project-management contact for customers throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate procurement of equipment, components, instrumentation, and supporting systems required for custom projects.
  • Ensure purchased and internally manufactured equipment is properly tested and validated prior to shipment.
  • Coordinate equipment installation, startup, commissioning, training, and final customer acceptance.
  • Manage approximately 8–10 Field Service Technicians responsible for equipment installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and customer support.
  • Prioritize field service activities and ensure appropriate technical resources are assigned to customer needs.
  • Maintain visibility into annual calibration requirements and other recurring service obligations for installed systems.
  • Coordinate vendors, customers, engineering, manufacturing, and field personnel during equipment installations.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including drawings, schematics, manuals, software documentation, calibration records, and safety documentation.
  • Manage project changes, change orders, technical risks, and Engineering Management of Change processes.
  • Participate in risk assessments, HAZOP reviews, and other project safety activities as required.
  • Ensure equipment and project execution comply with applicable OSHA, NFPA, ASME, and other relevant industry standards.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting support for mechanical, electrical, controls, instrumentation, and process-equipment issues.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project execution, product performance, field service effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline required.
  • 5+ years of experience within engineering, technical project management, capital equipment, machine design, automation, or a related environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing technically complex projects involving custom equipment or machinery.
  • Experience taking equipment projects from design and engineering through manufacturing, installation, startup, or commissioning.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems with exposure to electrical, controls, instrumentation, or automation systems.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, schematics, equipment specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD; SolidWorks experience is preferred.
  • Strong customer-facing communication and project-management skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple engineering, manufacturing, vendor, and customer stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Previous leadership or field service management experience is highly desirable.
  • Ability to travel approximately 20% domestically and internationally.
Preferred Experience
  • Aerospace, automotive, advanced manufacturing, or industrial equipment experience.
  • Capital equipment, custom machinery, robotic automation, or engineered systems.
  • Thermal spray, industrial coating, surface treatment, or industrial gas equipment.
  • Equipment installation, commissioning, and customer-site acceptance.
  • Robotic automation and controls systems.
  • Field service leadership or management.
  • PMP or other formal project management certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
The Opportunity

This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of a technically sophisticated product and project portfolio within a collaborative, fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment.

The facility supports multiple product lines and highly customized customer projects, creating significant interaction across engineering, production, purchasing, finance, field service, and customers. Rather than focusing on one narrow engineering discipline, this role provides visibility into the entire lifecycle of multimillion-dollar engineered equipment systems.

The successful candidate will inherit an established field service team while taking ownership of a growing portfolio of custom projects for customers in aerospace and other advanced manufacturing industries.
