Job Summary
Java Technical Lead
Key Responsibilities
1. Core Java Development & JVM Internals
- Enterprise Java Codebase: Proficiency maintaining standard API gateway platform cores written in Java, modifying Repository implementations, Services, and data persistence layers.
- Refactoring & Library Migrations: Hands-on experience doing large-scale framework migrations (e.g., upgrading legacy Jackson-Mapper (jackson-asl) dependencies to Jackson Databind or Gson object mapping).
- Custom Policies & Security Validation: Patching custom Policy handlers (like Custom KVM Entry auditing), hardening Java Security Extensions, and fixing JavaCallout permissions execution paths against vulnerability exploits.
- JVM Tuning & Memory Profiling: Diagnosing latency issues, Garbage Collection (GC) overhead failures, thread pooling roadblocks, high memory utilization, and thread contention within runtime Java environments.
2. Core Apigee Edge Internal Architecture
- Component Ecosystem: Deep understanding of Apigee Message Processors (MP), Routers (RT), and Management Servers (MGMT).
- Runtime Lifecycle: Familiarity with MP bootup deployment flows, proxy chaining, undeployment sequences, and health check paradigms.
- Internal Tooling: Proficiency using internal administration and deployment frameworks (e.g., `dsctl`, `cs_tools`, `apigee-adminapi.sh`).
- State & Metadata Management: Working knowledge of Apache Zookeeper and Apache Cassandra (latency debugging, metadata issues).
3. Infrastructure Security, Certificates, & Protocols
- TLS/SSL Handshaking: Hands-on experience debugging TLS 1.3, OpenSSL migrations (1.1.1 upgrade complexities), and cipher suite auditing/compatibility troubleshooting.
- Certificate & DB Maintenance: Routine administration of free-trial certificate rotations and MaxMind GeoIP DB updates.
- PKI Concepts: Comprehension of Keysizes, Extended Key Usage (EKU) validations, and ECDSA/RSA compatibility.
- Vulnerability Remediation: Assessing CVE impact (e.g., JVM permissions, JavaCallout vulnerabilities) and applying patches securely to platform components.
4. DevOps, Cloud Operations, & Troubleshooting
- Containerization & Packaging: Crafting packer revisions, auditing base images (e.g., Rocky Linux, EL8), and writing/debugging Cloud user data boot scripts.
- Operating Systems & Networking: Systems-level Linux troubleshooting. Diagnosing high swap usage, NGINX memory leaks, proxy chaining 499 errors, high CPU/Heap spikes, and socket exhaustion.
- Cloud Platforms: Operational knowledge of managing runtime pods across AWS (Classic/Application Load Balancers) and GCP (VPC peering, Load Balancing).
- Log/Dump Analysis: Capturing and dissecting heap dumps, thread dumps (jstack), and TCP dumps.
5. Monitoring, Metrics, & Incident Response
- Telemetries & Analytics: Managing monitoring systems upgrades (e.g., InfluxDB Migration) and log metric forwarding.
- BigQuery & Grafana: Querying BigQuery system logs and interpreting Grafana dashboards to spot micro-service anomalies.
- Incident Resilience: Writing and tuning Monit/monitoring alerts to capture "black hole" MP nodes or unresponsive pods.
- On-call SRE mindset: Capability to handle P0/P1 customer outages, draft Root Cause Analysis (RCA) docs, and fulfill Postmortem Action Items (PMAIs).
6. API Proxies, Policies, & Specifications
- Policy Constraints: Working understanding of fundamental Apigee proxies/policies such as `OASValidation`, `ServiceCallout`, and `SpikeArrest`.
- Specifications: Understanding API validations against Swagger/OAS formats.
- Custom extensions: Basic visibility into JavaCallout runtime handling or Lua script overlays in Nginx.
7. Automated Testing & Refactoring
- Performance Benchmarking: Executing stress and volume performance checks for release readiness.
- Test Script Refactoring: Migrating historic test frameworks from JMeter scripts to TestNG workflows.
- CI/CD Pipeline Maintenance: Troubleshooting internal build or Functional "splits" pipeline blockers.
