Job summary

Harnham is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to bring AI/ML capabilities from prototype to production within an established SaaS platform. This hands-on technical leadership role partners with Data Science to build scalable backend services and to integrate AI into customer-facing products.

You will lead architecture decisions, design reusable AI infrastructure, and drive projects from inception to delivery, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security across cloud environments.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of software engineering experience.
• Strong server-side Java and backend engineering experience.
• Experience integrating AI/ML into commercial products.
• Proven experience taking projects from prototype to production.
• Strong architecture and system design skills.
• Experience modernizing existing production platforms.
• Linux and cloud experience (AWS/Azure/GCP).
• Strong testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and security fundamentals.
• Basic SQL and data-centric platforms.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve backend services across a SaaS platform.
• Integrate LLMs, RAG, model serving, predictions, and scoring into products.
• Partner with Data Science to move models from prototype to production.
• Design reusable infrastructure and patterns for AI development.
• Lead projects from architecture through delivery.
• Make build vs. buy and broader architectural decisions.
• Improve scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
• Communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs to leadership.
