Job description

Description/Comment:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results;
  2. Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens;
  3. Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOPs);
  4. Review and release test results;
  5. Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines;
  6. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and all maintenance performed;
  7. Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's acceptable performance levels;
  8. Identify problems that may affect test performance or reporting, correct issues, or notify supervisors;
  9. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications;
  10. Report STATS or Critical results to clients according to department procedures;
  11. Answer questions from customers or lab personnel if applicable;
  12. Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site;
  13. Maintain the general appearance of the department;
  14. Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and opened dates if applicable; review/train on new procedures;
  15. Attend monthly department and additional training/educational meetings;
  16. Participate in safety training sessions, know the location and contents of the manual, and use safety equipment;
  17. Participate in government or regulatory inspections if needed;
  18. Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.
Required Knowledge:

A solid understanding of basic laboratory testing is required. Good computer skills, knowledge of QC and QA, and familiarity with all laboratory areas are essential.

Education:

BS in Medical Technology preferred; or BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology; or Associate's degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or previous qualification as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493. 1433. Foreign candidates must provide credential evaluation from IERF; US candidates must provide original transcripts. Certification as MT/MLT from recognized organizations (ASCP or AMT) is preferred or required.

Work Experience:

At least 1 year of clinical experience in high complexity testing is preferred. Minimum of 1 year in highly complex testing for candidates with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology. Licensure as required.

  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple procedures;
  • Interact with other departments;
  • Good customer service skills for contact with clients;
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
