Job summary

L.L.Bean in Freeport, ME is seeking a temporary Technical Designer to ensure fit, construction and quality across apparel. The role partners with cross‑functional teams to develop and maintain technical specs and drive improvements, lasting 4–6 months with onsite attendance twice weekly.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years in technical design or related fields, strong garment construction knowledge, pattern making, and proficiency with 3D (CLO), Illustrator and PDM. Associates degree required.

  • Strong knowledge of garment construction, fit terminology.
  • Experience with pattern making, draping, and grading.
  • Proficient with Adobe Illustrator and PDM; basic CLO knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate samples for fit, construction, and quality against established standards.
  • Lead fit sessions and provide technical recommendations to improve product fit.
  • Create and maintain technical specifications throughout development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with Product Development and Merchandising to resolve fit issues.
  • Support commercialization by ensuring production readiness and brand alignment.

We're seeking an experienced Technical Designer to join our team on a temporary basis and help ensure our products meet the exceptional fit, construction, and quality standards our customers expect. This is a temporary assignment expected to last 4-6 months and requires onsite presence at our Freeport, Maine headquarters two days per week. In this role, you'll partner closely with cross‑functional teams to evaluate product fit, develop and maintain technical specifications, and drive continuous improvements throughout the product development process. What You’ll Do
  • Evaluate samples for fit, construction, and quality against established standards.
  • Conduct detailed garment measurements and ensure consistency within specification guidelines.
  • Lead fit sessions and provide technical recommendations to improve product fit and performance.
  • Create, maintain, and update technical specifications throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Partner with Product Development, Merchandising, and other cross‑functional teams to resolve fit and construction issues.
  • Identify opportunities to improve fit, quality, and overall product consistency.
  • Support commercialization efforts by helping ensure products are production‑ready and aligned with brand standards.
What You’ll Bring
  • Experience in Technical Design, Product Development, Apparel Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of garment construction, fit evaluation, patternmaking, and quality standards.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical specifications and fit documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence cross‑functional partners.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

  • 2-year associates degree
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of apparel or accessory garment construction, terminology and fit
  • Strong knowledge of pattern making/draping and grading
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills including 3D (CLO), Adobe Illustrator and PDM (Product Data Management)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Solid technical drawing skills
  • Good understanding of the L.L.Bean customer
  • Good attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced production environment
  • Ability to lift/carry 20lbs. on a regular basis

L.L.Bean uses a market-based compensation approach. The anticipated starting base pay for this position is $73,000.00 - $91,200.00. Individual compensation may vary based on factors such as a candidate’s experience, qualifications, education, geographic location, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
