Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Technical Buyer to join a manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will have strong purchasing experience and a practical understanding of industrial manufacturing processes, particularly metal machining, welding, and fabrication.

The organization manufactures engineered flow measurement equipment and complex machined and fabricated metal components for industrial, water/wastewater, aerospace, and defense applications. The role involves sourcing specialized materials, managing technical purchasing requirements, and ensuring compliance with stringent quality documentation and traceability standards.

The successful candidate will independently manage procurement activities, develop strong supplier relationships, and collaborate closely with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams. This position also offers opportunities to take on increasing responsibility for purchasing personnel and broader supply chain management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage procurement of raw materials, including pipe, plate, bar, forging, flanges, fittings, castings, composites, manufactured components, instrumentation, packaging supplies, and other industrial goods.
  • Source and coordinate outside manufacturing services, including machining, heat treatment, coatings, testing, and other specialized processes.
  • Request and evaluate supplier quotations, negotiate pricing and commercial terms, and issue purchase orders through the ERP system.
  • Identify and develop competitive domestic and, where contractually permitted, international suppliers.
  • Review purchasing requirements, engineering drawings, material specifications, and applicable quality documentation.
  • Ensure all purchased materials and services meet technical specifications, certification requirements, and material traceability standards.
  • Monitor purchase order progress and proactively manage supplier delivery schedules to meet manufacturing requirements and customer commitments.
  • Build and maintain supplier relationships, evaluate vendor performance, and identify opportunities for cost savings and improved delivery reliability.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records and contribute to improvements in procurement procedures, reporting, and supplier performance tracking.
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated purchasing experience in an industrial manufacturing environment, preferably involving machined and fabricated metal products.
  • Strong practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, particularly machining, welding, and metal fabrication.
  • Experience with technical purchasing specifications, Material Test Reports (MTRs), material certifications, and traceability requirements.
  • Familiarity with industrial materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and specialty alloys.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP purchasing systems; familiarity with Shoptech E2 is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and supplier documentation.
  • Strong organizational, negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general business software.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively with suppliers and internal departments.
  • A degree in engineering, supply chain management, business, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience in manufacturing and purchasing will also be considered.
  • Ability to comply with applicable contractual security, export-control, and information-handling requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with ASME codes, ASTM material standards, and related manufacturing requirements.
  • Experience procuring materials and services for pressure piping, pressure vessels, or other code-regulated equipment.
  • Knowledge of DFARS, domestic material sourcing requirements, and contractual procurement requirements.
  • Experience developing supplier qualification programs, maintaining vendor performance records, and tracking purchasing performance metrics.
  • Previous experience supervising purchasing personnel or managing broader supply chain activities.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001, ITAR, CMMC, and contractual flow-down requirements.
Benefits
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan with employer contributions
  • Life insurance
  • Bonus plan
  • Paid vacation and holidays
