Job summary

Newport Public School District's Newport Career & Technical Center is seeking a Technical Assistant for Cosmetology to support the instructor and maintain a well‑organized class and lab environment at NACTC in Newport, RI.

The role requires a high school diploma, eligibility for a Rhode Island Cosmetology Instructor’s license, and completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre‑Employment Training Program, with favorable consideration for 4 years of salon experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Hold or be eligible for Rhode Island Cosmetology Instructor’s license.
• Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre‑Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE).
• Meet one of the following three requirements: two years of college (48 credits) or an associate degree or higher; or demonstrated reading/writing/mathematics readiness.
• Four years of salon experience preferred.
• Ability to establish professional rapport with students and teachers.
• Demonstrated proficiency in current cosmetology skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist the teacher/director in all classroom and lab activities, including a variety of activities as prescribed by the teacher.
• Render services as required.
• Assist with the education process, present materials, teacher‑directed activities, and operation of lab equipment.
• Work with students in the Cosmetology program under the teacher’s supervision.
• Collaborate on visits to industry for NACTC students to participate in career awareness activities.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the teacher and/or Director of Newport Area Career & Technical Center.

Job Description

POSITION: Technical Assistant for Cosmetology

LOCATION: NACTC

REPORTS TO: Principal and or designee

START DATE: 09/01/2026

JOB DESCRIPTION: To assist the instructor in providing a well‑organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Education, Training, and Experience

• Graduation from high school or high school equivalency certificate.
• Hold or be eligible for a Rhode Island Cosmetology Instructor’s license
• Be of good character
• Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre‑Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE).
• Meet one of the following three requirements:
  • Completed at least two years (48 credits) of study at an institution of higher education; or
  • Obtained an associate’s degree or higher; or
  • Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment: knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics; or reading, writing, and mathematics readiness
• Four (4) years of successful salon experience is preferred.
• Ability to establish professional rapport with students and teachers.
• Must be prepared to demonstrate a proficiency in current skills and knowledge of cosmetology.
• Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, previous experience, and the interview process.

Responsibilities

• To assist the teacher/director in all areas of classroom and lab activities, including a variety of activities as prescribed by the teacher.
• To render services as required.

Terms of Employment

• Technical Assistant. 32.5 hours per week. ½ hour unpaid lunch.
• 10 month position
• Pay grade 5
