Job Overview:

A distinguished intellectual property law firm located in Alexandria, VA is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent or Technical Advisor with a background in electrical or computer engineering. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team focused on securing patent rights for emerging technologies, particularly in the fields of semiconductors, software, and artificial intelligence. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to work closely with inventors and global clients, supporting innovation through comprehensive patent protection strategies.

Duties:

Draft technical patent applications involving electrical, computer, and software-related inventions

Analyze USPTO office actions and craft persuasive responses

Conduct invention disclosure meetings with engineers and scientists

Support the prosecution of patent applications from filing to grant

Collaborate with attorneys to develop strategic IP portfolios

Translate complex technical information into clear, concise patent documents

Stay current with advancements in AI, semiconductor, and software technologies

Requirements:

Minimum of 2 years of experience in a law firm or patent boutique setting focusing on patent drafting and prosecution

Familiarity with U.S. patent laws and procedures, especially in software and AI-related applications

Demonstrated ability to write high-quality technical documents

Strong verbal communication and client interaction skills

Attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field required

Master’s degree or PhD preferred

Additional technical coursework or certifications are considered a plus

Certifications:

USPTO Registration (for Patent Agents) is strongly preferred

Additional technical credentials (e.g., software development certifications) are advantageous

Skills:

Proficiency in patent application writing and technical analysis

Deep understanding of electrical and computer engineering principles

Familiarity with AI, machine learning, and semiconductor systems
