Job summary

Sonoco Products Company is seeking a Senior Manager/Director, Technical Accounting to lead complex accounting judgments, policy development, and cross‑functional initiatives in a hybrid role based in Charlotte, NC or Hartsville, SC.

You will work with the Sr. Director - Corporate Controllership on implementing new standards, supporting external reporting, audits, and strategic transactions. CPA is required and extensive public accounting exposure is valued.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting; CPA required.
• 9–12 years+ of experience, including 4–6 years in public accounting; Big 4 experience preferred.
• Knowledge of key technical accounting areas in US GAAP.
• Strong communication, planning and leadership skills.
• Willingness to travel; adaptable in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

Job description

While reporting to the Sr. Director - Corporate Controllership, the Technical Accounting Lead will include assessing accounting judgments, developing accounting policy and managing cross‑functional projects.

This is a hybrid position and can be located in Hartsville, SC or Charlotte, NC.

What you'll be doing:

• Identify and assess technical accounting issues in complex business transactions and prepare technical memorandums.
• Work closely with various business leaders to provide guidance on accounting transactions.
• Own the process of writing, revising, and/or reviewing the Company's written accounting policies and providing guidance throughout the organization on the application of such policies.
• Understand current changes to accounting standards, SEC guidance and PCAOB regulations.
• Perform impact analysis of new accounting pronouncements (as needed) and lead implementation efforts across the Company.
• Research and resolve technical accounting issues on a timely basis with the Company's external auditors.
• Support the Company's external reporting function, ensuring that the financial statements and disclosures are in conformity with the accounting principles generally accepted in the US.
• Assist with internal and external audits to ensure complete, timely, and accurate responses to information requests.
• Assist deal teams with pre and post deal‑closure activities, namely, evaluating accounting implications on various acquisition and disposition transactions pre‑close; post deal‑close, work with the Corporate Development team and external consultant on performing purchase price accounting exercise.
• Lead annual impairment analysis for all critical asset categories on the balance sheet i.e., goodwill, long‑lived assets (PP&E, leases, intangibles), joint ventures, and other cost method investments.
• Organize enterprise‑wide quarterly trainings on various topics as it relates to US GAAP, internal controls, and SEC matters.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Compensation:

Senior Manager, Technical Accounting: The annual base salary range for this role is from $160,720 to $180,810, plus an annual target bonus 14.5% of base salary.

Associate Director, Technical Accounting: The annual base salary range for this role is from $176,800 to $198,900, plus an annual target bonus 16.5% of base salary.

Director, Technical Accounting: The annual base salary range for this role is from $191,600 to $215,550, plus an annual target bonus of 18.75% of base salary.
