Job summary

The Motley Fool is seeking a Tech Lead for Fool.com and Motley Fool Money. You will set technical direction, own production reliability, and code alongside engineers while mentoring the team across two high-visibility platforms.

You’ll partner with product, design, and business units to translate goals into scalable software, drive AI integration, and uphold engineering standards in a fast-moving, remote environment in the United States.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a tech lead or senior+ capacity.
• Fluent in Python with real production Django experience; Wagtail experience is a plus.
• Proficient with Next.js codebase; front-end not a black box.
• Deep understanding of HTTP request/response cycle, REST API design, and end-to-end web app work.
• Experience with AWS and modern observability tools (Datadog, Sentry) in production.
• Track record mentoring and growing engineers—not just technically, but as people.
• Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production apps, or building toward it.
• Bonus: experience leading high-traffic consumer web platforms; familiarity with content-driven sites; CI/CD (GitHub Actions) and Playwright testing.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for Fool.com and Motley Fool Money, balancing product velocity with long-term code health.
• Stay hands-on: write code, review PRs, and pair with the team daily.
• Mentor and grow direct reports through 1:1s and technical coaching.
• Own production reliability: incident response, observability, monitoring and alerting.
• Partner with product, design, marketing, and leadership to translate business goals into technical strategy.
• Drive AI integration thoughtfully in production features and team development.
• Maintain and evolve engineering standards, deployment processes, and tooling.
• Collaborate across business units to align decisions with company direction.
