Job summary

LEONA MICHIGAN EDUCATION GROUP in Detroit seeks a dedicated special education teacher to work primarily in the regular classroom while providing direct services to students with disabilities. You will consult with general education teachers to plan accommodations and may team-teach in language arts, math, science, and social studies.

The role requires eligibility collaboration, IEP development, and coordination with families and multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with special education certification or master's degree.
• Experience: none required; teaching experience preferred.
• Skilled in interviewing and individual and group treatment techniques.
• Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations for special education students.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to make decisions in accordance with board policies and established procedures.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct services to special education students in the regular classroom.
• Consult and assist general education teachers for planning, adaptations, and accommodations.
• Team teach with general education teachers in language arts, math, science and social studies.
• Assist supervision of volunteers and teacher aides in curriculum modifications and individualized support.
• Assist in developing behavior intervention plans for students on caseload.
• Consult with teachers in assigning grades and developing evaluative measures for students on caseload.
• Participate in child study teams and assist with evaluation of educational needs and intervention strategies.
• Schedule and conduct IEPT meetings.
• Identify student deficits and write IEP goals and transition plans.
• Work as a member of MET for students referred for services.
• Liaise with parents of special education students; encourage participation in services.
• Other duties may be assigned.
