Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Tool Room and Die Service/Build Up activities, scheduling and preventive maintenance.
  • Perform die build up/teardown; weld repairs to print standards; replace components.
  • Manage and schedule tool and die work; coordinate with engineering and production staff.
  • Maintain tooling schedule; establish tool repair standards; monitor tooling life.
  • Track tooling life and recommend tooling replacements; ensure housekeeping and safety.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing concepts and cross-department improvements.

Job description

Position Title: Tool Room Lead
Department: Tool Room
Reports to: Tool Room Manager

Exempt Non-Exempt

Primary Function: (Describe the purpose of this position to the Department/Function. State in terms of objectives and primary goals. What is the reason this position exists?)

To oversee and direct activities of team members within the Tool Room in the absence of the Supervisor/Manager and ensure production schedule is being met.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: (Describe the 5 essential activities performed in carrying out the objectives of the position, including: significant tasks, responsibilities, projects and decisions.)
  • Manages and performs Tool Room and Die Service/Build Up activities which includes, builds, modifications, repairs, scheduling, and preventive maintenance.
  • Performs die build up and teardown activities. Repairs die cavities by welding and cutting back to print standards. Evaluates and replaces die components as necessary. Operates crane, welder, grinders, lathes, mills, etc.
  • Manages and schedules tool and die work.
  • Coordinates with engineering and production staff to determine needs and priorities.
  • Maintains tooling schedule for repairs.
  • Establishes tool repair standards for time and labor.
  • Makes recommendation of tool life based on repairs/cost to maintain tooling.
  • Tracking all tooling life and makes recommendations for tooling replacement schedule.
  • Maintains Tool Room equipment. Ensures proper care and maintenance of department equipment. Manages all routine servicing of machines.
  • Monitors production problems and creates counter measures. Recommends and develops new processes and procedures and initiates/participates in their implementation.
  • Ensures proper housekeeping and inventory of tools and materials. Develops and ensures safe practices are being followed related to tooling activities.
  • Recommends department changes and new processes and procedures and participates in their implementation.
  • Contributes to and supports the existence of a positive work environment through personal involvement by communicating, interacting, and behaving in a manner that promotes productive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and others with whom such relationships are important to the success of company operations.

  • Responsible for following Lean Manufacturing Concepts.
  • Work with other departments to improve operating procedures while maintaining their individual production requirements.
  • Back fill during breaks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task.
  • Work with supervisors to make sure they have the necessary supplies to operate.
  • Required Skill/Knowledge: (What specific types of skills/knowledge are required to perform the job? What kind/amount of experience is required?)
  • Machine Shop Technology Certification
  • Tool and Die Journeyman's card
  • Experience with large die cast tooling
  • Demonstrated ability to use and train others with measurement tools.
  • Preferred Skills/ Knowledge: (Ideal skill set)
  • Bilingual English / Spanish
  • Fork Lift Certified
  • Previous leadership experience
  • Education Level / Required Certification:

High School Degree or equivalent Education / Certification.

Ability to work with changing schedules, machine break downs and employment changes while production schedule.
