Job summary

Whirlwind Steel in Houston is seeking a Paint Department Team Leader to guide daily painting operations, ensure quality, safety, and production goals, and support team development.

You will supervise and train team members, coordinate with management, operate painting equipment and cranes as needed, and maintain accurate production reports in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• Previous industrial painting or manufacturing experience.

Job Summary:

The Paint Department Team Leader is responsible for leading and supporting the Paint Department team while helping ensure production goals, quality standards, and safety expectations are met. This role works closely with management to communicate goals and deadlines, support team members, assist with training and hiring, and help maintain an efficient and organized department. The Team Leader will also have hands-on knowledge of industrial painting processes and assist with painting operations as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and support Paint Department team members by communicating daily goals, deadlines, expectations, and safety practices.
• Support the team manager and perform management duties when the manager is absent or unavailable.
• Oversee daily painting operations to ensure products are properly prepared, primed, and finished according to quality standards.
• Clean and prepare surfaces by removing grease, dirt, rust, and other contaminants using appropriate materials and equipment.
• Select and mix coating liquids to meet required colors and specifications using paddle or mechanical mixers.
• Operate spray guns, adjust valves and nozzles, and apply primers and finishing coats for even coverage and quality finish.
• Operate overhead cranes and monorail paint hoists to safely position materials and products for painting.
• Monitor team member work for quality, safety, productivity, and compliance with company guidelines.
• Provide encouragement and coaching to team members and identify areas where additional training or skill development may be needed.
• Assist management with hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members.
• Answer team member questions and help address work-related concerns or problems.
• Conduct team meetings to communicate best practices, safety expectations, and ongoing department goals.
• Manage department inventory and supplies, maintain accurate records, and communicate ordering needs to management.
• Maintain daily reports and communicate department performance, production needs, and concerns to management.
• Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
• Previous industrial painting or manufacturing experience required.
• Strong knowledge of industrial painting techniques and safety practices.
• Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts is essential.
• Working knowledge of production planning and scheduling.
• Knowledge of inventory control and maintaining accurate inventory records.
• Ability to create and maintain daily production reports.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.
• Ability to train, coach, and support team members.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Must pass a pulmonary fit test to meet safety and health standards.
