Description
The Team Lead- Machine Shop at Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. is responsible for supervising a production team to ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient manufacturing operations. This role leads to daily workflow, reinforces standard work, coach employees, conducts performance reviews, and supports continuous improvement initiatives. The Team Lead ensures that safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives are met through effective leadership, problem solving, and communication across all shifts.
Essential Job Functions:
S afety
- Train, coach, and reinforce safety expectations with new and existing employees.
- Support incident investigations and assist with corrective action implementation.
- Maintain 5S standards and lead by example in sustaining a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
Production & Schedule Execution
- Lead daily shift handoff meetings to communicate priorities, production targets, and status updates.
- Review daily production schedules and assign work based on skill, capacity, and equipment availability.
- Prepare the next day’s production plan and communicate expectations to the team.
- Ensure all team members follow standard work and achieve required cycle times.
- Monitor workflow, production output, downtime, and bottlenecks and respond quickly to maintain flow.
- Investigate root causes for schedule misses using Man, Material, Machine, Method.
- Implement corrective action plans and follow through to ensure resolution.
- Ensure accurate and timely production reporting, including counts, scrap, and downtime events.
Quality & Process Control
- Verify that gauges, inspection devices, and quality tools are used correctly and remain within calibration.
- Maintain daily awareness of all NCPs generated by the team and conduct face-to-face reviews with involved employees.
- Lead root cause analysis for nonconforming product and implement corrective measure s.
- Communicate corrective action status during shift meetings and at Asaichi meetings when applicable.
Cost Control & Resource Management
- Monitor raw material consumption, PPE usage, and consumables to ensure accuracy and avoid waste.
- Identify discrepancies in material usage or cycle times and work with the Supervisor to resolve them.
- Reinforce cost-conscious behavior and correct wasteful practices through coaching and accountability.
- Support initiatives that reduce scrap, rework, downtime, and other cost drivers.
Team Supervision & Employee Development
- Provide direct supervision of production team members, including daily oversight and coaching.
- Conduct performance reviews, mid-year evaluations, and ongoing development discussions.
- Manage coaching-level disciplinary conversations and document concerns in partnership with HR.
- Support team onboarding and ensure all employees receive adequate training and follow standard work.
- Maintain an accurate skills matrix and identify cross-training needs.
- Address interpersonal conflicts promptly and appropriately.
- Promote a positive, accountable, and respectful team environment aligned with STR’s values.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Direct supervision of assigned hourly manufacturing team members.
- Responsible for coaching, training, assigning work, conducting performance reviews, and issuing coaching-level corrective action.
- Does not have authority to suspend or terminate without approval

Requirements
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
- Required to work onsite 100% of the time.
Travel:
- Limited travel within the Warren area for training, meetings, or operational support.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment.
- Percentage of Office – 20 %
- Percentage of Travel – 5%
- Percentage of Manufacturing and Distribution - 75 %
- Exposure to heat, noise, chemicals, moving equipment, and industrial processes is expected.
- Required PPE must be worn at all times in designated areas.

Required and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required .
- 2–4 years of manufacturing experience preferred.
- Prior supervisory or team lead experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of standard work, cycle times, and quality expectations.
- Working knowledge of safety practices, 5S, and basic problem-solving tools (5 Why, Fishbone, RCA).
- Ability to conduct performance feedback and coaching discussions professionally
