Job summary

The University of Minnesota is hiring Teaching Specialists for the Department of Mechanical Engineering to teach engineering courses. About the Job

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities occasionally needs Teaching Specialists to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty or graduate students. Appointments may be full‑time or part‑time and may be limited to one semester. This does not constitute a posting for vacancies, but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the 2026‑2027 academic year (August – May). Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as‑needed basis throughout the current academic year. Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. This position is not eligible for H‑1B visa sponsorship.

Job Duties
  • Prepare and deliver lectures (20%)
  • Prepare homework assignments, quizzes and exams (20%)
  • Assess student work (20%)
  • Hold office hours (15%)
  • Supervise the teaching assistants (15%)
  • Manage the administration of the course (10%)
Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Masters degree in mechanical engineering or a related field required for appointment.
  • The ability to instruct effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels to a diverse group of engineering students is required.
  • Expertise and documented teaching activities must demonstrate a strong potential to enhance the department's teaching missions.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience teaching engineering curriculum at an institute of higher education is highly desired.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $3,100/ course credit; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
