As a Teaching Assistant, you would, under the general supervision of a fully qualified teacher, perform duties related to providing direct instructional service to students. Some of these duties include, but would not be limited to: utilizing suggested techniques and lesson plans, tests and teaching aids developed by a fully qualified teacher, instructing learners individually or in groups for the purpose of conveying specific and limited subject matter; reinforcing subject matter previously taught by a teacher by guiding pupils through a prescribed and frequently repetitive learning exercise; administering, proctoring, and correcting tests; preparing training aids and utilizing technology and computers as part of the learning environment; maintaining group control in the class; and accompanying learners on field trips or on special activities.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

Licenses/Certificates/Degrees You must have one of the following certificates issued by the New York State Education Department:

• Either 1: Level 3 Teaching Assistant Certificate
• Or 2: Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant Certificate
• Or 3: Continuing Certificate as a Teaching Assistant
• Or 4: Provisional, Initial, Permanent, or Professional Teacher Certificate

Requirements for Continued Employment: Possession of a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Certificate, Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant Certificate, Continuing Certificate as a Teaching Assistant, or a Provisional, Initial, Permanent, or Professional Teacher Certificate issued by the New York State Education Department is necessary for continued employment. Loss of certification will result in termination of employment.
