Job summary

The Archdiocese of St. Louis is seeking a Substitute Teacher to provide instruction and supervision in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

The role follows lesson plans, maintains classroom management, and supports student learning and safety in line with Catholic school values. Responsibilities include delivering content, adapting lessons, maintaining schedules, and communicating with the regular teacher.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field preferred.
  • Teaching certification or substitute permit preferred or required where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the absent teacher or school administration.
  • Deliver instructional content using appropriate materials, tools, technology, and resources.
  • Provide clear directions and explanations to students.
  • Adapt lessons and activities to meet individual needs.
  • Maintain established schedules, routines, and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, orderly, and productive classroom environment.
  • Enforce school rules and disciplinary policies consistently.
  • Manage student behavior and address disruptions.
  • Engage students in meaningful learning activities and encourage participation.
  • Provide guidance to help students complete work.
  • Offer support to students with varying academic needs.
  • Monitor participation and progress; administer quizzes and assessments as directed.
  • Communicate observations to the regular teacher or administration.

Job Summary

The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing instruction and supervision in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The Substitute Teacher follows lesson plans, maintains classroom management, supports student learning, and ensures the safety and well-being of all students. The Substitute Teacher helps maintain continuity in the educational process and may be assigned to various grade levels and subject areas. The Substitute Teacher is expected to support the mission, values, and Catholic identity of the school.

Job Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction
  • Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the absent teacher or school administration.
  • Deliver instructional content using appropriate materials, tools, technology, and resources.
  • Provide clear directions and explanations to students.
  • Adapt lessons and activities as appropriate to meet the needs of individual students and the classroom.
  • Maintain established classroom schedules, routines, and procedures.
Classroom Management
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, orderly, and productive classroom environment.
  • Enforce school rules, classroom expectations, and disciplinary policies consistently and appropriately.
  • Manage student behavior and address disruptions using positive and age-appropriate methods.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries while treating students with patience, dignity, and respect.
Student Engagement and Support
  • Engage students in meaningful learning activities and encourage active participation.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to help students understand and complete assigned work.
  • Encourage students to demonstrate responsibility, respect, kindness, and other values consistent with the Catholic school environment.
  • Provide appropriate support to students with varying academic and learning needs.
Assessments and Feedback
  • Monitor student participation and progress throughout the school day.
  • Administer quizzes, tests, assignments, and other assessments as directed by the regular teacher.
  • Collect and organize completed student work.
  • Provide feedback and communicate relevant observations to the regular teacher or school administration.
Communication
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with students, teachers, school staff, and administrators.
  • Report significant student concerns, behavioral issues, conflicts, accidents, or other incidents to the appropriate school personnel.
  • Provide the regular teacher with a summary of classroom activities, completed assignments, and any concerns that arose during the day.
Safety and Student Well-Being
  • Maintain the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of students throughout the school day.
  • Follow all school health, safety, emergency, and child-protection procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision of students in the classroom and during transitions, lunch, recess, and other assigned activities.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and seek assistance from school personnel when necessary.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, staff, and school matters.
Catholic School Responsibilities
  • Support and uphold the Catholic mission, values, and educational philosophy of the school.
  • Model Christian values through professional conduct and respectful interactions with students and staff.
  • Support classroom prayer, religious activities, and faith-based practices as directed by the regular teacher or school administration.
  • Promote a classroom environment that reflects respect, compassion, service, responsibility, and dignity for every student.
Job Requirements
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field preferred.
Licensing / Certification
  • Teaching certification or substitute teacher permit preferred or required when applicable under state, diocesan, or school requirements.
Experience
  • Previous teaching, substitute teaching, classroom, or childcare experience preferred.
  • Experience working with children or in an educational setting is beneficial.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective classroom-management skills.
  • Ability to follow lesson plans and written directions.
  • Ability to work independently while following school policies and procedures.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work with different grade levels, subject areas, and classroom settings.
  • Basic proficiency with classroom technology and instructional tools.
  • Ability to establish positive and professional relationships with students and staff.
  • Dependable, responsible, patient, and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Commitment to supporting the Catholic mission and values of the school.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred but not required.
