Job description

JOB GOAL

Provide students receiving special education services with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials according to ability levels. May work in self-contained, general education, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teacher certificate in Special Education and assigned content
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Understand and support the mission, vision and values of Harmony Public Schools
  • Model and instill a love of learning
  • Teach multiple academic subjects in a resource room setting and/or provide in-class support through inclusion
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that maximize student engagement and learning
  • Utilize a variety of teaching practices and methodologies that reflect diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds in order to meet the individual needs of students
  • Implement a clear and consistent behavior management system while developing students’ character and sense of community in the classroom
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction
  • Implement instructional programs adopted by Harmony for assigned students
  • Collect data to determine student strengths and weaknesses, to develop student-based IEPs, and to measure progress on IEPs
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers and other relevant staff members in developing and implementing IEPs
  • Modify the curriculum utilized by HPS based on the individual needs of each student
  • Assist general education teachers in implementing a modified curriculum
  • Provide case management duties for assigned students
  • Attend ARD meetings for assigned students and prepare ARD paperwork
  • Attend department, school, district and parent meetings
  • Participate in district and campus staff development and serve on staff committees
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues and maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities
  • Assign and grade classwork, homework, tests, and assignments
  • Takes daily attendance
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  • Maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and community members
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations
  • Ability to lead a team of people for developing effective teaching strategies for students with disabilities
  • Ability to teach several lesson plans at the same time
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral, with all levels of management, internal and external to the district
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district
  • Proficiency in using effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to use computer including software, database used by the district, spreadsheet, word processing software, calculator, copy machine and telephone
  • Ability to analyze data
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Light work: may require occasional light lifting
  • Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required
  • Position is in classroom setting with intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing
  • Moderate travel is required
