Job summary

Denver Public Schools is seeking a Long-Term Substitute teacher to deliver grade-appropriate, standard-based instruction in the absence of the classroom teacher. You will follow district curricula and maintain classroom routines to support student learning.

This temporary role runs from November 9 to November 20, 2026, with pay of $31.503 per hour and additional Total Reward offerings. DPS is committed to equity and high standards for every learner.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
  • Valid Colorado Department of Education teaching license (DPS accepts CDE Application Receipt for 90 days).
  • Commitment to equity and high-quality education for all students.
  • Residence in Colorado with ability to meet physical demands of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels students to encourage and support student achievement.
  • Monitors, supervises and reinforces classroom behavior per policy.
  • Observes, evaluates, reports, and records student performance and health.
  • Prepares course outlines, objectives and materials per curriculum guidelines.
  • Sets clear objectives for lessons and projects.
  • Presents subject matter using varied teaching methods and technology.
  • Instructs students individually and in groups.
  • Prepares, administers and grades tests; records grades in district software.
  • Prepares attendance and activity reports as required.
  • Communicates with parents/guardians and staff to resolve issues.
  • Coordinates instructional efforts with teachers and administrators.

A Long-Term Substitute is responsible for teaching appropriate grade level standard-based curriculum to students, following school/district approved curriculum while the classroom teacher is absent for an extended period of time.

What You'll Do
  • Counsels students to encourage and support student achievement.
  • Monitors, supervises, coordinates, and enforces rule of conduct and behavior of assigned students and reinforces positive student behaviors in accordance with school and District policy.
  • Observes, evaluates, reports, and records students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Prepares educational course outlines, objectives, and materials according to curriculum guidelines or state and local requirements.
  • Establishes and communicates clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects to students.
  • Presents subject matter to students, using various teaching methods and technology, adjusting teaching style and method to meet student learning style.
  • Instructs students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods (e.g., lectures, technology, discussions).
  • Prepares, administers, assigns, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate student progress, reporting grades using District software.
  • Prepares student, attendance and activity reports as required by administrators.
  • Communicates with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems and coordinates instructional efforts.
What You’ll Need
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
  • Have a valid Colorado Department of Education (CDE) teaching license. (DPS does accept a CDE Application Receipt for 90 days.)
  • Lead for racial and educational excellence and work to dismantle systems of oppression and inequity in our community, along with believing in and supporting all students so they feel seen and heard with access to high quality education.
  • Live and work with a permanent home address in Colorado while working with us.
  • Have the ability with or without accommodations to meet the physical demands of the position.
