I. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To instruct inmates/probationers/parolees/students in basic educational skills including, but not limited to, reading, arithmetic and writing. This to be done either on an individual basis, a group setting, or both.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• (a) Responsible for program data and maintenance of student management databases, as well as other data entry functions
• (b) To instruct inmates/probationers/parolees/students, using various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstration
• (c) To administer in-house tests (MAPT, etc.) to determine appropriate grade level, and shall continue to monitor student progress
• (d) To maintain individual inmate student records and keep supervisor apprised of inmate student needs and progress
• (e) To be responsible for daily classroom activity
• (f) To report any potentially dangerous situation in the school area to the School Security Officer
• (g) To inventory classroom materials needed and submit a report to the supervisor
• (h) To develop and administer tests, as well as grade tests and examinations
• (i) Prepare course outlines and objectives according to curriculum guidelines or state and local requirements
• (j) To use audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations
• (k) To evaluate, record and report inmate student progress
• (l) To confer with inmates/probationers/parolees/students and counselors to resolve behavioral and academic problems
• (m) To maintain discipline in the classroom
• (n) To participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops
• (o) Select, store, order, issue and inventory classroom equipment, materials and supplies
• (p) Perform any other educational duties assigned
• (q) To report for work on time and appropriately attired

III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Preferred: MTEL or ABE licensure.

B. Special Requirements:

Must be available to work for night programming

C. Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

• Collaborates as a team member with all staff to foster an environment for improved academic and personal outcomes for every student
• Attain certification to administer required assessments such as HiSET and GED, both computer based and paper based formats
• Must communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, so others can understand
• The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing
• The ability to listen and to understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
• The ability to speak clearly so that it is understandable to a listener
• The ability to instruct others how to do something
• The ability to talk to others to effectively convey information
• Able to use multiple approaches when learning or teaching new things
• General knowledge of teaching methods
• General knowledge of subject area

D. Physical Qualifications:

• Minimal physical effort demanded when performing functions under typical classroom conditions.
• Frequently required to sit, talk, and hear.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

IV. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direct supervision of the CJSC Program Director and Assistant Program Director who provides instruction and guidance, assigns work, and reviews performance through oral and written reports
