Teacher - English Language Arts, Gr. 9-12 (Long-Term Substitute) (SY24-25)

This is a long-term substitute position expected to start on 05/16/2025 and conclude at the end of the school year. All substitutes are hired as per diem, even for long-term assignments, starting at the per diem rate. For more information about becoming a BPS substitute, visit our website.

Boston Public Schools seeks a highly qualified English Language Arts Teacher with an SEI endorsement. Reports to: Principal/Head of School

Responsibilities
  • Teach English in an SEI setting, covering literature, composition, reading, and journalism following district and state standards.
  • Adapt curriculum materials to develop relevant, sequential assignments that challenge students.

Using the BPS Rubric of Effective Teaching, the following skills are prioritized:

  • Accountability for Student Achievement: Set high goals, assess understanding regularly, and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Communicating Content Knowledge: Demonstrate mastery and enthusiasm, connect content to real-world applications, and convey material engagingly.
  • Effective Instruction: Scaffold and differentiate instruction, motivate students, and foster a respectful, inclusive environment.
  • Cultural Proficiency: Respect diverse backgrounds and create an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Parent/Family Engagement: Build collaborative relationships with families.
  • Professional Reflection & Collaboration: Reflect on practice, seek feedback, and collaborate with colleagues.
Qualifications - Required
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Valid Massachusetts Teaching License in English for the appropriate grade level.
  • Meet all licensing and qualification standards.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. from the first day.
Qualifications - Preferred
  • Experience in urban schools.
  • Degree in English or related field.
  • SEI endorsement or dual certification in ESL.
  • Moderate Disabilities licensure preferred.
  • Fluency in one of BPS's official languages (Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali) is valued.
