Job summary

Memspa is seeking a Teacher for Cognitively Impaired (CI) or Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to join the Jackson County Intermediate School District. Plan and deliver daily instructional activities for students classified as CI and/or ASD, coordinating with staff to integrate services and academic goals.

Responsibilities include assessment, progress reporting and collaboration with families. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in special education and a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize and execute daily instructional activities for cognitively/ASD-impaired students.

• Develop curriculum and teaching methods for the cognitively/ASD-impaired program.
• Assist in screening, evaluating and recommending placements for students.
• Communicate with parents and staff about student progress and goals.

Summary: Plan, organize and execute daily instructional activities for students who are classified as cognitively and/or autistic impaired. Must be able to integrate objectives of the ancillary service staff with classroom and program structure. Assessment of students, student guidance, parent conferencing and other related duties as assigned. Responsible for planning instruction and/or adoption of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (Does not include all tasks employee may be expected to perform.)

• Implement instructional activities defined by existing performance objectives.
• Plan and develop student activities in coordination with teacher assistants.
• Maintain effective relationships with ancillary staff and parents.
• Maintain all records pertaining to instructional activities.
• Provide a basic core program for cognitively and/or autistic impaired students.
• Counsel individuals and groups of cognitively and/or autistic impaired students with educational, occupational and personal problems.
• Coordinate and supervise work experience and on-campus job-training programs involving the cognitively and/or autistic impaired.
• Plan curriculum, lessons, Special Education programs and teaching methods.
• Evaluate students’ progress based on papers submitted, test scores and observations made in and out of the classroom.
• Maintain the physical environment of the classroom.
• Maintain contact with parents of students.
• Work with staff to coordinate goals and objectives.
• Assist the cognitively and/or autistic impaired students in making a realistic assessment of their abilities and establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with these abilities.
• Assist in screening, evaluating and recommending placements of applicants in the schools cognitively and/or autistic impaired program.
• Evaluate student’s progress based on work output and observation, determine goals, objectives and directions.
• Prepare report cards, educational records, IEP forms, classroom observation records, and other forms.
• Regular and predictable in-person attendance is required for this position.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Certifications, and Experience: Required Bachelor’s degree in a field of study related to special education. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with the required endorsement of either cognitive impairment or autistic impairment. Must meet highly qualified guidelines.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

Employment Date, Salary, and Fringe Benefits: Anticipated employment date is as soon as possible. Placement on the Special Education Certified Salary Schedule will depend on qualifications and experience. New employee starting salary range is $56,258-$112,740. Paid health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurances, sick and personal business days. This position is FLSA exempt.
