Job description

Teacher Assistant

The Teacher Assistant (including substitutes and floaters) assists the Head Start Teacher in delivering the classroom curriculum in accordance with Head Start regulations, licensing, and guidelines. The role involves ensuring that services are aligned with the Social Determinants of Health through a trauma-informed care lens, as defined by the agency. The Teacher Assistant maintains a classroom environment where children understand expectations, rules are consistent, and positive relationships are built through effective communication, appropriate physical proximity, respect, positive discipline, and guidance. Supervision of children must be maintained at all times.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: High School or higher in Early Childhood Education.
• Preferred: Associates or higher in Early Childhood Education.

Experience

• Required: High School Diploma or GED plus a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; working towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
• Required: Current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification.
• Preferred: Previous classroom experience and ability to utilize various learning techniques for curriculum delivery.
• Understanding of cultural differences and sensitivity to their implications for service delivery.
• Fluency in English and Spanish (reading, writing, speaking) is desirable.
