Job summary

Lawrence Public Schools is seeking a Visual Arts Teacher for Parthum Elementary School. The role is full-time, 183 days, non-exempt, reporting to the Principal with a focus on rigorous visual arts instruction.

The successful candidate will design developmentally appropriate lessons aligned with MA Visual Arts Frameworks, foster creativity and critical thinking, and promote equity and inclusive practice across a diverse student body.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Art Education or related field.
• Massachusetts DESE Certification in Visual Arts (Grades K-8) preferred.
• Experience with middle school students is preferred.
• Bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Create and deliver standards-based visual arts lessons for middle school students.
• Teach a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art.
• Foster student creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.
• Support students in developing critical thinking and self-expression through the visual arts.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom environment.
• Display and celebrate student artwork in school and public exhibitions.
• Regularly assess and document student learning and progress.
• Incorporate technology and interdisciplinary connections where appropriate.
• Participate in school-wide planning, professional development, and collaborative meetings.

Position Summary The Visual Arts Teacher will be responsible for organizing and maintaining a safe and inclusive classroom environment while ensuring instruction is aligned with the Massachusetts Visual Arts Curriculum Frameworks. This position requires the ability to design developmentally appropriate challenges, provide rigorous instruction, and implement processes that foster strong habits of mind. The ideal candidate supports diverse learning styles and creates opportunities for students to work both independently and collaboratively. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Create and deliver engaging, standards-based visual arts lessons for middle school students
• Teach a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital art
• Foster student creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration
• Support students in developing critical thinking and self-expression through the visual arts
• Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom environment
• Display and celebrate student artwork throughout the school and in public exhibitions
• Regularly assess and document student learning and progress
• Incorporate technology and interdisciplinary connections where appropriate

• Maintain ongoing communication with students, families, and colleagues
• Model and promote high expectations for student behavior and academic achievement
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Highly qualified visual arts educator with strong studio and teaching skills
• Deep understanding of artmaking processes, materials, and techniques
• Knowledge of how diverse learners acquire and engage with visual arts content
• Ability to reflect on teaching practices and use data to improve instruction
• Willingness to accept and apply constructive feedback from supervisors and peers
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Ability to differentiate instruction and support inclusion
• Commitment to equity, access, and culturally responsive teaching practices
• Qualifications & Requirements:
• Bachelor's Degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or related field
• Massachusetts DESE Certification in Visual Arts (Grades K-8)
• Experience working with middle school students preferred
• Bilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply

• Salary in accordance with the Lawrence Teachers' Union Contract ($61,788-$94,614)
