Job description

Tax Supervisor

Rochester, New York

Insero Talent Solutions has partnered with a growing company in its search for an experienced Tax Supervisor to join a well-established team with growing operations across North America. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong CPA looking to transition from public accounting into a highly visible, in-house role.

The successful candidate will serve as the organization's primary internal tax expert, overseeing tax compliance, planning, and related initiatives while partnering closely with senior leadership and external advisors. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of a critical business function while supporting continued organizational growth.

This is a highly hands-on, individual contributor position ideal for someone who enjoys technical tax work, problem-solving, and business partnership. Rather than managing a team, the Tax Supervisor will take direct ownership of tax-related activities while serving as a trusted resource to leadership across the organization.

Responsibilities
Income Tax Compliance & Planning
  • Coordinate federal, state, local, and Canadian income tax compliance across multiple legal entities.
  • Prepare annual income tax workpapers, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external tax advisors, coordinating the preparation and timely filing of tax returns.
  • Review tax returns for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Research complex tax issues, evaluate potential implications, and provide recommendations to leadership.
  • Support tax planning initiatives designed to improve efficiency, mitigate risk, and maintain compliance.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual income tax provision activities.
State & Local Tax (SALT)
  • Monitor state and local tax obligations, including nexus considerations and filing requirements as business operations expand.
  • Coordinate tax registrations and compliance requirements across new states and Canadian provinces.
  • Stay informed of legislative and regulatory developments that may impact the organization's tax obligations.
  • Assist with tax audits, notices, inquiries, and other regulatory matters.
  • Partner with external advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely compliance.
Sales & Use Tax
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate sales and use tax filings across applicable jurisdictions.
  • Monitor economic nexus requirements and evaluate tax implications associated with expanding business activities.
  • Support exemption certificate administration, documentation, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Accounting, Finance, and Operations to strengthen sales and use tax processes.
  • Research taxability questions and assist with resolving discrepancies, notices, and compliance-related issues.
Process Improvement & Strategic Initiatives
  • Evaluate existing tax processes, documentation, and internal controls to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain tax compliance calendars, filing schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, enhance reporting accuracy, and improve overall tax efficiency.
  • Support acquisitions, new entity formation, business restructuring, and other organizational initiatives with tax implications.
  • Partner with senior leadership and external advisors to evaluate tax considerations associated with business decisions.
  • Serve as an internal resource to Accounting, Finance, and Operations on tax-related questions and initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, and CPA license, required.
  • 6+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally within public accounting.
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal and multistate corporate taxation.
  • Experience with C Corporations and pass-through entities.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently research complex tax matters and apply findings to business situations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical tax matters to non-tax professionals.
  • Comfortable working independently in a hands-on, individual contributor capacity while collaborating with internal leadership and external advisors.
  • Exposure to Canadian corporate taxation or international tax matters, a plus.
  • Experience with sales and use tax compliance and multistate nexus requirements.
  • Prior experience supporting manufacturing, distribution, technology, or other operationally complex organizations.
  • Experience working with multiple legal entities or multijurisdictional tax structures.
  • Familiarity with tax research, compliance, and reporting software.
  • Interest in transitioning from public accounting into a long-term corporate tax leadership opportunity.
