Job summary

United Way of Central Alabama, Inc. seeks a Site Coordinator to expand the Free Tax Preparation (VITA) program and support volunteers who make it possible. This hands-on role emphasizes collaboration, organization, and building partnerships to achieve financial stability for families.

The position requires coordinating site partners, training volunteers, and ensuring accurate returns and timely filing across Alabama. Weekend/evening work and travel within the state may be required.

Qualifications

• Three+ years professional work experience.
• Experience training and supervising volunteers, and professional experience with financial skills preferred.
• Knowledge of personal income tax law at state and federal level.

Responsibilities

• Identify new tax site partners/locations and formalize location.
• Provide ongoing training and support to volunteers.
• Provide oversight to tax volunteers and offsite locations on an ongoing basis.
• Maintain the My Way volunteer engagement platform as it relates to VITA and ensure volunteer hours are captured for reporting purposes.
• Complete annual IRS Certifications at the Advanced Level, and all other required Site Coordinator training.
• Supervise work of volunteer tax preparers to ensure accuracy of return preparation and adherence to IRS Quality Site Requirements, certification levels, and all policies and funder regulations.
• Mentor volunteers to develop their capacity, including responding to questions about processes, software, tax law or logistics, and ensure that volunteers sign in and out to document their time contributed.
• Develop and set up online scheduling using an appropriate tool for volunteers to sign up for tax preparation shifts.
• Monitor and manage volunteer availability to match with needs of program.
• Assist with the coordination of volunteer scheduling.
• Provide support to VITA Program Director during training sessions.
• Mentor volunteers after training to promote successful completion of certification and develop their capacity, including responding to questions about process, software, tax law or logistics.
• Ensure all needed documentation is collected from volunteers before they begin work, background checks are completed as needed, and volunteers sign in and out to document their time contributed.
• Provide support to volunteers preparing returns and assist with tax return preparation and quality review as required to ensure accurate and timely completion.
• Ensure that all completed returns to be electronically filed are submitted within 24 hours, preferably at the end of the same day, and monitor to identify returns with error messages to ensure they are resolved appropriately.
• Maintain weekly logs of return production for program management and required reporting.
• Other duties as assigned.
