We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to join a growing CPA firm and play a key role in managing client relationships, overseeing tax engagements, and developing members of the tax team.
This position is designed for an experienced public accounting professional who can independently manage complex tax engagements while serving as a trusted advisor to clients. The Tax Manager will work closely with firm partners and will have significant exposure to business owners, executives, and high-net-worth individuals.
An active CPA license and current or previous public accounting firm experience are required for consideration.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and review federal, state, and local tax compliance engagements for a diverse portfolio of clients.
- Review complex individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, and fiduciary tax returns.
- Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously while ensuring deadlines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
- Provide proactive tax planning and advisory services to business owners, executives, and high-net-worth individuals.
- Research complex federal and state tax issues and provide clear recommendations to clients and firm leadership.
- Identify tax-saving opportunities and assist clients with year-round tax strategies.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients and develop long-term, trusted client relationships.
- Review work prepared by staff and senior accountants and provide meaningful feedback and technical guidance.
- Mentor, train, and develop tax staff and seniors.
- Assist with IRS and state tax notices, examinations, and other tax authority matters.
- Collaborate with partners on complex client matters, business development opportunities, and firm initiatives.
- Monitor changes in federal and state tax regulations and communicate relevant developments to clients and team members.
- Assist with workflow management and resource planning during busy seasons.
- Participate in new client onboarding and identify opportunities to expand services with existing clients.
Required Qualifications
- Active CPA license – REQUIRED.
- Public accounting / CPA firm tax experience – REQUIRED.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- Typically 5+ years of progressive tax experience within a public accounting firm, including experience reviewing returns and managing engagements.
- Strong technical knowledge of federal and state taxation.
- Significant experience with business tax returns, including partnerships, S corporations, and C corporations.
- Experience reviewing individual income tax returns, including returns for business owners and high-net-worth individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple client engagements and deadlines.
- Strong client relationship and communication skills.
- Experience supervising, reviewing, and developing accounting staff.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Taxation, Accounting, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience at the Tax Manager or experienced Tax Supervisor level within a CPA firm.
- Experience working with closely held and privately owned businesses.
- Experience with multi-state taxation and complex entity structures.
- Familiarity with professional tax and accounting software such as CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, UltraTax, GoSystem, or similar platforms.
