Build a Tax Practice From the Ground Up
A fast-growing finance and accounting advisory firm is seeking a Tax Director to establish and lead a newly launched tax practice. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an experienced tax professional who enjoys building processes, developing teams, advising growth-stage companies, and contributing to firm strategy.
Working closely with executive leadership, you will shape the future of the tax function while serving as a trusted advisor to venture-backed, technology, SaaS, manufacturing, professional services, and high-growth businesses.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, launch, and scale the firm's tax advisory practice.
- Develop service offerings, engagement models, pricing structures, and operational processes.
- Recruit, mentor, and lead tax professionals as the practice expands.
- Partner with accounting, finance, and advisory teams to provide integrated client solutions.
- Serve as the lead tax advisor for a portfolio of clients.
- Prepare and review complex tax returns and related filings.
- Advise clients on entity structure, tax planning, capital events, mergers and acquisitions, and equity compensation matters.
- Provide guidance related to federal and state income tax, pass-through entities, corporate taxation, R&D credits, and other strategic tax issues.
- Build long-term client relationships and deliver practical business-focused recommendations.
Business Growth
- Contribute to business development and client retention efforts.
- Support thought leadership initiatives and market expansion activities.
- Monitor regulatory developments and communicate relevant impacts to clients and internal stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Active CPA license.
- 8+ years of progressive tax experience.
- Public accounting or CPA firm background.
- Prior leadership experience at the Manager level or above.
- Strong technical expertise in corporate taxation, including C-Corporation returns.
- Experience working with LLCs and pass-through entities.
- Demonstrated success in client-facing advisory roles.
- Ability to independently manage and grow a tax practice.
- Strong communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in practice development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree such as MST, MSA, JD, or LLM.
- Experience advising venture-backed, startup, or private equity-backed companies.
- Knowledge of QSBS, 83(b) elections, equity compensation arrangements, cap tables, and venture-backed business structures.
- SALT and sales tax experience.
- Tax planning and strategic advisory expertise.
- Experience with R&D tax credits and related studies.
