Job Description
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Treasury, the Tax Director oversees federal, state, and international tax compliance for Southern New Hampshire University and is the primary tax resource for the university. You will provide critical expertise and guidance to senior leadership of the university to support important projects, create awareness of tax requirements at appropriate levels within the university, and helps departments understand options available to them while being cognizant of the interests and responsibilities of the university. This individual contributor role is fully remote. #LI-remote
What you'll do:
-Unrelated business income tax
-State and local taxes
-Payroll, fringe benefits, and compensation taxes
-Fellowship and scholarship tax issues
-Federal and state excise taxes
-International taxes
-Property tax compliance and exemption issues
-Sales and use tax and exemption issues
-Joint venture and investment tax issues
-Provide expert tax guidance to senior leadership to support main university projects including cost savings and avoidance of tax exposure.
-Conduct tax related due diligence for potential mergers, acquisitions, and investments.
-Draft and update university policies and procedures to strengthen compliance with applicable tax laws.
-Develop relationships with and provide guidance to operating departments to ensure record keeping on all tax-related matters, assist them with planning transactions and activities to maximize tax savings and to stay in compliance with regulations impacting the university.
-Develop and maintain relationships with outside service providers such as the university’s outside tax advisor.
-Maintain current knowledge of tax issues affecting higher education institutions and tax-exempt organizations in general.
-Conduct analysis and review of university programs and activities following federal and state law and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) standards.
-Reconcile and analyze tax accounts, maintain records, and workpapers and draft memos to support returns filed and tax positions taken.

Years of experience: Ten years tax experience in higher education or public accounting with a focus on nonprofits.
Degree(s): Master’s degree in accounting, taxation, or a law degree
Professional Certification(s): CPA license or other professional accounting license and/or membership in a state bar.
Technical tax knowledge, research skills, and ability to apply and communicate that knowledge.
Substantial experience in not-for-profit tax return preparation and review.
Knowledge of corporate and partnership tax.
Excellent tax and legal research ability.
Customer service oriented.
