JOB SUMMARY:

The Tax Director is responsible for leading a high-performing team of Tax and Financial Professionals, providing leadership, guidance, structure, processes and support to ensure the successful implementation of tax planning strategies for high-net-worth individuals and businesses. This role is part of the Leadership Team at JFS and plays a critical role in the company's growth, aligned with its 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year vision. Additionally, the Tax Director oversees the compliance function, including hands on and supervising preparation and technical review of individual, partnership, pass-through entity, and corporate tax returns. Due to the size of the team, this next year will require this role to streamline the department and be both hands on working shoulder to shoulder with the team while also mentoring, leading and growing the team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Yes

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Hire, train, lead, coach, and hold the tax team accountable.
  • Mentor junior staff to ensure they grow their skills and career with JFS.
  • Provide ongoing training and development for new and existing employees.
  • Offer real-time feedback and conduct weekly 1:1s with team members.
  • Foster a high-performance culture, motivating the team to stay productive and positive, especially during peak seasons.
  • Assign projects, review work, and ensure deadlines are met with proactive communication.
  • Conduct performance reviews and address conflicts as needed.
  • Lead client kick-off meetings with the Sales Team to establish strong relationships.
  • Ensure timely, proactive communication with clients throughout the tax cycle.

Tax Compliance & Advisory:

  • Oversee the preparation and review of business and individual income tax returns.
  • Lead research on complex tax strategies and issues outside of routine tax preparation.
  • Assist with responses to tax notices, liaising with taxing agencies as necessary.
  • Manage sales tax filings and reporting to the state.

Client Engagement & Consulting:

  • Run or attend quarterly client meetings to review financial performance, provide feedback, and discuss tax projections.
  • Review client business and personal income for quarterly estimated tax calculations and provide advisory services as needed.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the month-end preparation of board financial statements and reconciliation of workpapers.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Organize and maintain the tax database, ensuring all entries are recorded accurately in accounting & project management software platforms.
  • Implement tax reduction strategies and provide accounting support to the team as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • 8 years of Tax experience required with proven work experience as a Tax Senior/Tax Director
  • 3 years of Accounting Experience Required
  • 2+ years leading a team of remote employees
  • Accounting and payroll knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and tax laws.
  • Must be a licensed tax preparer, EA, or CPA
  • Proficient in Accounting Software (such as QBO, QBD) and Ultra Tax
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate a team in a professional setting.
  • Strong background in compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.
  • Experience with Project Management Software such as Asana, Notion, Monday, ClickUp, a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel may be required for off location meetings, conferences, or events.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk while working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.

JOB TYPE:

Full-time

PAY:

Salary Range: $130,000-150,000 – Bonus Opportunity two times during the year: 60 days after each busy season (April 15th and October 15), up to 10% of salary when you and your team hit Performance Metrics (realization, returns out the door, quality). Total Compensation potential with including bonuses = $180,000.
