Job summary

Virginia Tax’s Office of Compliance seeks Tax Examiner positions in Richmond to examine state individual income tax returns and ensure tax compliance. You will review federal and state information to determine liabilities and explain results to taxpayers.

The role requires knowledge of federal and Virginia tax laws, strong communication and computer skills, and the ability to prioritize work independently or in a team.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of federal and Virginia tax laws and forms, focusing on individual income tax.
• Experience preparing, reviewing, or examining individual income tax returns at state or federal level.
• Ability to manage cases and deadlines, work independently and with a team.
• Clear and professional communication with taxpayers, in writing and verbally.
• Proficient with electronic records, email, and spreadsheets to complete and track work.
• Handle confidential taxpayer information per policies and laws.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience with case-management systems or spreadsheet functions.
• Experience using Windows and Microsoft Office.
• Experience handling high call volumes with good service levels.

Responsibilities

• Analyze state income tax returns for accuracy and compliance with tax laws.
• Determine taxpayer liability through audit programs based on federal and state information.
• Communicate findings to taxpayers and educate on filing procedures.
• Prepare and submit reports accurately and timely.
• Manage caseload to maintain high customer service levels.
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
