Position Summary
The Tax Accountant is responsible for supporting the company's tax compliance and reporting functions, with primary responsibility for the preparation and filing of sales tax returns, tax account reconciliations, and electronic tax payments. This role works closely with the Tax and Accounting teams to ensure timely and accurate compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements while maintaining the integrity of tax data, records, and reporting systems.
Responsibilities
- Prepare filing of federal, state and local corporate tax returns. Respond to state & local jurisdictions upon receipt of tax notices regarding sales tax.
- Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales tax returns in accordance with applicable state and local tax regulations.
- Process and monitor electronic funds transfers (EFTs) for tax payments to state and local taxing authorities.
- Manage sales tax electronic payment activity for multiple jurisdictions and ensure all payments are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Prepare annual Puerto Rico personal property returns and make quarterly payments.
- Prepare information necessary to file annual Puerto Rico municipal tax returns.
- Reconcile sales tax accounts to ensure accuracy of tax balances and supporting records.
- Update and maintain sales tax rates, vendor codes, jurisdictional information, and tax-related system records.
- Maintain and administer tax automation and tax reporting systems, including Vertex or similar tax software platforms.
- Review purchase journal activity and prepare required entries related to electronic tax payments and tax reporting process.
- Assist with tax research, compliance projects, account analysis, and supporting documentation for audits and regulatory inquiries.
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end tax reporting and reconciliation processes.
- Maintain organized tax records and documentation to support internal controls and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with Accounting, Payroll, Finance, and external agencies to address tax-related questions and resolve issues.
- Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as required to support company objectives.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting or tax experience, preferably in sales tax, corporate tax with multi-state tax compliance.
- Knowledge of sales and corporate tax reporting, tax compliance, tax reconciliations and electronic tax payment processes.
- Experience with tax software, and Microsoft Excel.
- Familiarity with Vertex and Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across departments.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive financial information.
