Role Overview

The Chief Engineer reports to the Master and is responsible for managing the Engineering Department, ensuring the safe, efficient, and economical operation, maintenance, and repairs of the vessel. The Chief Engineer may delegate responsibilities but retains overall accountability.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure compliance with the Company's Management System (MS) requirements related to engineering.
  2. Implement environmental programs related to engineering practices, such as Envirotags.
  3. Oversee the working practices of the engineering staff to ensure safety and efficiency.
  4. Maintain cleanliness and proper maintenance of the Engine Room, minimizing leakages and ensuring proper storage of spare gear, engine stores, boiler feed water, fuel, and lube oil.
  5. Assist with vessel's structural maintenance and repair.
  6. Manage quality analysis of lube oils and bunkers.
  7. Maintain the Main Engine at normal service power unless directed otherwise.
  8. Ensure proper management and quality monitoring of potable water onboard.
  9. Maintain accurate engineering records and report to the office.
  10. Discipline engineering staff and those delegated duties, investigating breaches of discipline or professional standards.
  11. Allocate watch-keeping duties, ensuring a licensed Engineer is always in charge of machinery.
  12. Ensure crew in the engine department receive adequate rest in accordance with STCW and OPA90 guidelines.
  13. Station the Chief Engineer in the Engine control room during berthing, un-berthing, and other prudent times.
  14. Ensure engineers keep accurate logs and records.
  15. Safeguard instruction books, ship's drawings, and records for examination and study.
  16. Manage fuel oil and water supplies, supervising bunkering operations.
  17. Coordinate fuel oil tank rotation with the Chief Officer.
  18. Set and maintain the Planned Maintenance System according to classification, manufacturer, and company standards.
  19. Authorize spare and store requisitions, maintaining inventories at reasonable levels, and reconcile ROB stocks periodically.
  20. Conduct daily rounds of machinery and machinery spaces.
  21. Issue operation and maintenance instructions for deck and pump-room machinery.
  22. Conduct machinery surveys if authorized.
  23. Monitor and manage shipboard waste and oil-to-sea interfaces daily.
  24. Address environmental concerns promptly, including pollution prevention and waste management.
  25. Manage waste oil, supervise Oil Water Separators (OWS), and Incinerator operations.
  26. Maintain the Engine Room Operational Record Book (ORB) and record all operations accurately.
  27. Ensure all engine room records, soundings, and tank measurements are precise and documented.
