Job summary

The Tailman position at Hughes Brothers Construction, Inc. supports the pipe crew on heavy civil projects across Central Florida, assisting with storm, sewer, and water utility installations on active job sites.

Responsibilities include assisting with installation, aligning pipe, guiding equipment operators, installing gaskets and fittings, checking grade with laser levels, backfilling, and maintaining a safe, productive work area; English and Spanish fluency is a plus but not required.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Able to use hand tools and small equipment.
• Able to stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds.
• Basic understanding of construction principles.
• Able to work independently or as part of a team.
• Out-of-town travel and overtime possible.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• English and Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.

• Set and secure pipe to line and grade under direction of Pipe Layer and Foreman.
• Guide heavy equipment operators using hand signals and radio communication.
• Install gaskets, couplings, and fittings.
• Check grade using laser levels and grade rods.
• Backfill and compact around installed pipe.
• Ensure proper bedding and compaction of trench materials.
• Maintain a safe and clean work area.
• Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
• Assist with loading/unloading materials and tools.
• Perform general labor duties as assigned.

Hughes Brothers Construction is now hiring! We are a heavy civil contractor specializing in large site infrastructure, underground utilities and roadway construction throughout Central Florida. The Tailman supports the pipe crew in the installation of underground utilities and infrastructure projects. This position works closely with the Operator and Pipe Layer to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient installation of storm, sewer, and water systems on heavy civil construction job sites.
