Job description

The Tactical Network Engineer serves as a subject matter expert for the Army’s backbone communication systems. This role is critical for bridging the gap between high-level network architecture and tactical execution in the field. The engineer will configure, verify, and test newly fielded equipment, ensuring it aligns with the broader architectural intent of a resilient and diverse network. While focused on hands-on implementation, the candidate must understand the principles of advanced network design, including the integration of varied transport paths like satellite, cellular, and terrestrial links. This position provides systems engineering oversight and direct support to units, identifying and resolving issues to maintain the integrity of our tactical communications infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Configuration and Verification:Configure, test, and validate network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, and voice-over-IP systems, ensuring they are implemented in accordance with overarching architectural designs.
  • Tier-1/2 Troubleshooting:Serve as the first point of contact for network issues, performing diagnostics, identifying problems, and recommending resolutions for all PM-delivered systems. Escalate complex issues to senior engineers as needed.
  • Documentation and Reporting:Manage and document system configurations, trouble incidents, and test procedures. Report results to functional managers to inform ongoing architectural and engineering efforts.
  • Field Support:Provide direct, hands‑on support to units on major Army installations or in forward areas of operation, assisting with the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of WIN-T equipment.
  • Integration Support:Coordinate with program System Engineering leads to address integration challenges and support the implementation of new requirements, ensuring tactical systems mesh with the enterprise network.
  • Architectural Awareness:Maintain a working knowledge of the high-level network architecture, including the use of diverse routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP) and transport mediums (e.g., SATCOM, 5G, fiber) to better inform tactical-level decisions and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Security Clearance:Must have an active Secret clearance.

  • Education/Experience:

    • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a similar science equivalent.
    • OR4+ years of relevant experience in configuring and/or maintaining tactical network equipment (e.g., WIN-T).
  • Core Knowledge:

    • Fundamental understanding of Systems Engineering processes and methodologies.
    • Knowledge of WIN-T systems, including Cisco routers, switches, ASA firewalls, CallManager, and IP voice networks.
    • Knowledge of RF including SATCOM and Terrestrial waveforms
    • Familiarity with foundational networking principles and the OSI model.
Desired Qualifications & Skills
  • An understanding of architectural-level networking, including the concepts behind using eBGP/iBGP and varied transport links (LEO/GEO satellite, 5G, terrestrial radio).
  • Knowledge of network services such as DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, and SharePoint.
  • Specialized experience gained as an engineer in industry or through service in an active, reserve, or National Guard unit.
  • Basic understanding of the acquisition lifecycle (Systems Planning, Research, Development, and Engineering [SPRDE]).
