TACOM (RRAD): Sheet-Metal Worker, Maintenance (Contingency)
Program Summary

The U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) sustains the Army’s mission to develop, acquire, field, and sustain ground combat, tactical, and support systems throughout their lifecycle. The program focuses on ensuring operational readiness, reliability, and safety of automotive and ground support equipment critical to Army operations. Under this contract, personnel provide maintenance, repair, overhaul, and sustainment support in accordance with Army technical manuals, safety standards, and performance requirements.

Job Summary

The Sheet-Metal Worker, Maintenance performs metal fabrication, structural repair, and body restoration on tactical and support vehicles. This role repairs damaged vehicle bodies, frames, panels, and structural components using welding, cutting, grinding, shaping, and straightening techniques to return vehicles to serviceable condition. The repairman will perform fitting, riveting, fastening, and attachment of metal components to conduct repairs in accordance with quality, safety, and technical standards. This position is contingent upon award.

Roles and Responsibilities

Determines the extent of repair, replacement rebuild, and/or modification necessary, utilizing a knowledge of vehicle hull layout and changing configurations to restore and/or modify vehicle hull. Inspects entire hull for such things as mislocated, missing or damaged holes; operation and adjustment of hatches and ramp linkage assemblies; damage and tolerance allowed to tube, torsion bars, latches, bumpers, hinges, etc. Checks for cracks, breaks, tears, delamination of metal, correct parts and location of parts, etc. Determines method or technique, parts, equipment, etc. required to perform repair, rebuild and/or modification.

Fabricates parts, fixtures and templates, on occasion, using a working knowledge of drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of heavy mobile equipment metal body construction. Makes a wide range of simple to precision welds, utilizing inert gas shielded welding processes and occasionally electric or acetylene welding processes. Repairs items such as braces, brackets, hangers, etc. using hammers, dollies, and or special tools and welds replacements when items are not repairable. Repairs threaded holes by tapping, installing rosanes, helicoils, keenserts, and pull nuts, or welds and redrills. Lays out missing or mislocated holes, drills and taps to proper size, depth and thread.

Repairs, replaces, adjusts and installs ramp linkage, insuring proper operation. Replaces or repairs weak or damaged torsion bars, tubes, latches, catches, hinges and associated items. Repairs cracks and tears in doors, hinges and brackets. Replace doors as necessary due to severe damage or delamination. Straightens doors and hinges, utilizing hammers, dollies and blocks. Aligns doors with hull allowing proper clearances. Welds fabricated patches or parts, holes, hinges, etc. Straightens damaged panel areas using heat shrinking process. Works with aluminum alloy of a variety of thickness, welding all types of items assigned using flat, vertical, horizontal and overhead positions. Sets up and adjusts equipment maintaining proper heat, range, wire speed and gas flow.

Welds are typically subject to visual inspection. Completes conversion and/or modification cutting and drilling holes using equipment such as electric saw, fly cutter, counter bore, hole saw, and drill bits. Deburs, shapes, and smoothest holes utilizing deburring tool, file, grinder, etc. Performs in process and final inspection of vehicle for work performed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemental technical or vocational training preferred. Two to five years in the Automotive Body and Heavy Mobile Equipment Servicing Industry. Ability to perform general labor tasks. Must be able to read and write English, follow shop instructions, whether written, oral or electronic. Ability to obtain or maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (as required). U.S. citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience supporting DoD, Army, or TACOM programs. Prior government contracting experience.

Additional Information

This position will be a part of a physical work environment that requires standing, walking, and lifting. There is potential exposure to machinery, tools, fuels, oils, and outdoor conditions. Employees may also be required to work shifts, overtime, or weekend support based on mission needs.
