Stratolaunch is a technology accelerator that engineers operationally realistic testing at Mach 5+. Our air-launched, Talon testbeds are reusable, cost-effective platforms that enable routine access to the hypersonic environment. We deliver flight data critical to validating system performance and achieving rapid technology deployment. Together with our customers, we drive innovations that are imperative to advancing national security.

To achieve these great efforts, Stratolaunch needs a Systems Safety Engineer to evaluate the hazards and safety of the Stratolaunch architecture. This position will work with our Engineering and Operations team for our Talon programs and new-development launch vehicles. This position will be a part to full time, remote, contracting position..

In this role, the selected candidate will lead the refinement and implementation of Stratolaunch’s system safety processes. In addition, core responsibilities will include contributing to the design and development of aerospace vehicles and processes from a safety perspective, documenting various system safety analyses, building and maintaining Stratolaunch’s Hazard Database, and assisting with safety-related requirements management. This candidate must be comfortable working in a flight test environment. This position directly reports to our Principal System Safety Engineer. Candidates must have a strong engineering education background, a desire to work in aviation and aerospace safety, and excellent writing skills.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Analyze technical data with interpretation for application to safety assessments
  • Perform FTAs, FMEAs, and other safety analyses on developmental systems
  • Develop Test Hazard Analysis (THA) and Ground Hazard Analysis (GHA) alongside Responsible Engineers (REs)
  • Author, review and update safety-related portions of all documentation
  • Author, review and monitor Safety Derived Requirements
  • Participate in the risk & change management processes for Stratolaunch
  • Document risks and risk mitigation plans, and track risk changes over time
  • Communicate regularly/comprehensively to the Principal Systems Safety Engineer and Vice President of Safety
  • Travel, as needed, to support the department

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of aerospace safety processes, (e.g. Hazard analysis, FMEAs, critical items list, and operational procedures evaluation)
  • Knowledge of fundamental aerospace safety processes, skilled at creating fault trees, functional hazard analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, probabilistic risk analysis, reliability, and system safety analysis
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Facilitation skills and ability to communicate effectively to varied audiences to gain support or resolve concerns
  • Ability to work on their own initiative and prioritize tasking to fit within the business goals
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities

Education & Experience

  • Sr Level ($117,000-$153,000): Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 5-10 years of Aerospace System Safety experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Staff Level ($152,500-$200,000): Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from accredited institution and 10-20 years of Aerospace System Safety experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity in a Reliability Software Suite (e.g. Windchill, Isograph, NPRD)
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Visio)

Mojave Air & Spaceport is located 95 miles north of Los Angeles.
