Job summary

Amentum is seeking a senior systems engineer for the Space Launch System Upper Stage office, providing systems engineering, requirements management, V&V coordination, and integration support. You will interface with NASA centers, contractors, payload customers, and ground systems to translate mission needs into executable solutions.

Responsibilities include developing operational concepts, verification strategies, and architecture documentation while managing risks and supporting lifecycle

Position Description

The person in this position will provide systems engineering, requirements management, verification and validation (V&V) coordination, and element-level integration support to the MSFC Systems Design and Verification Branch (EV72) for the Space Launch System (SLS) Upper Stage Office (USO).

The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will supply leadership and/or support for the development of key systems engineering products including operational concepts, system requirements, verification strategies, and interface integration activities are effectively developed, coordinated, and executed throughout the Upper Stage lifecycle.

This position will perform engineering and liaison functions, providing interface between the Upper Stage element, NASA organizations, contractor partners, ground systems, Orion and payload stakeholders, the engineer will ensure mission objectives and operational needs are translated into executable engineering solutions. The position supports the overarching CONOPS objective of delivering a fully integrated, verifiable, and operationally ready Upper Stage element capable of supporting safe and efficient launch vehicle processing, launch operations, and mission execution.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide systems engineering and interface integration support for SLS Upper Stage design, development, and operations.
  • Develop, assess, and integrate operational requirements across all lifecycle phases including manufacturing, transportation, receiving inspection, ground processing, stacking, integrated test and checkout (ITCO), launch preparation, and mission support.
  • Support development and maintenance of Operations and Maintenance Requirements and Specifications (OMRS), Work Authorization Documents (WADs), interface requirements, verification plans, and operational procedures.
  • Coordinate with NASA Centers, contractors, payload customers, and ground systems organizations to define and implement operational concepts, requirements, and integration strategies.
  • Support technical analyses, trade studies, risk assessments, and decision package development in support of the USO Chief Engineer and Lead Systems Engineer.
  • Coordinate with Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) organizations to identify, assess, and resolve hazards and operational concerns.
  • Support and/or lead technical integration activities across multiple NASA Centers, engineering disciplines, and contractor organizations.
  • Document and control the integrated architecture through interface requirement documents, interface control documents, functional schematics, verification artifacts, technical reports, and briefing packages.
  • Identify, communicate, and manage technical and operational risks through the NASA Risk Management System.
  • Support process improvement initiatives, affordability studies, mission readiness assessments, and activities focused on improving system operability, integration effectiveness, and lifecycle cost.
Qualifications

A degree in Engineering or related field with a minimum of 10 years of aerospace industry experience is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID.

Additional Requirements
  • Experience with systems engineering processes, including requirements development, allocation, verification planning, verification objectives, verification matrices, and verification implementation.
  • Experience with Digital Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools such as DOORS Next Generation, Jira, MagicDraw, or similar tools.
  • Experience in the development, integration, and implementation of complex aerospace or space systems.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, interface control documents, configuration documentation, and technical specifications.
  • Strong oral, written, interpersonal, customer engagement, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred
  • Experience developing plans, procedures, and operational concepts for spacecraft or launch vehicle systems.
  • Experience supporting spacecraft, payload, launch vehicle, or ground operations.
  • Understanding of launch vehicle systems definition, functional requirements development, and design integration.
  • Experience with NASA and/or MSFC spacecraft, launch vehicle development, ground processing, and ground support equipment.
  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and processes and SLS Program operations.
  • MBSE certification such as OMG-Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP).
Travel

Occasional travel to NASA Centers, contractor facilities, customer locations, and integration test sites may be required (approximately 0-20%, depending on mission and test requirements).

Essential Functions
Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
