Job summary

Amentum Space Exploration Division is seeking an Aerospace Systems Engineer to support the definition, design, development, analysis, testing, and integration of Mission and Fault Management systems for launch vehicles and spacecraft.

You will work with Flight Software, Safety, Systems Engineering, Ground Operations, and other teams to ensure robust fault management and compliant design across vehicle programs and space missions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or equivalent engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Recent graduates up to 10 years of experience.
• Experience on integrated project teams using systems engineering and project management processes.
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
• Self-motivated team player with experience in dynamic work environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop, manage, validate, and verify Mission and Fault Management requirements for Vehicle and Mission Management system specifications.
• Design, model, and test algorithms for vehicle events and sequences for nominal and off-nominal operations.
• Leverage subsystem knowledge to develop and analyze functions and parameters across pre-flight and flight phases.
• Analyze hazards, monitored conditions, and failure modes to design automated and operational responses.
• Interface with vehicle elements, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure fault management principles are integrated into design and operations.
• Present technical results and participate in reviews and issue resolution.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Aerospace Systems Engineer to support the definition, design, development, analysis, testing, and integration of Mission and Fault Management systems for launch vehicles and spacecraft.

Key Responsibilities

Mission and Fault Management Development

• Develop, manage, validate, and verify Mission and Fault Management requirements in support of Vehicle and Mission Management system specifications
• Design, model, and test algorithms for vehicle integrated events and sequences, including inter-system constraints, prerequisites, event triggers, and command requirements for both nominal and off-nominal operations

Systems Analysis and Design

• Leverage in-depth knowledge of aerospace vehicle subsystems (Engines, Main Propulsion System, Thrust Vector Control, Reaction Control Systems, Avionics, and/or Guidance Navigation and Control) to develop and analyze nominal and off-nominal system functions and operating parameters throughout pre-flight and flight phases
• Analyze and evaluate hazards, monitored conditions, measurements, and failure modes to design appropriate and effective automated and operational responses

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Interface with vehicle elements, contractors, and stakeholder organizations to ensure fault management principles are integrated into vehicle design, interfaces, and operations
• Participate in recurring vehicle, discipline, and subsystem meetings with stakeholders including Flight Software, Safety and Mission Assurance, Systems Engineering and Integration, Ground Operations, Flight Operations, Crew Office, Payload Integration Office, Element Contractors, Avionics, and Safety and Mission Assurance teams
• Present technical results and participate in discipline, project, and program-level reviews, including document reviews and issue resolution

Required Qualifications

• Experience working on integrated project teams using systems engineering and project management processes
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills
• Self-motivated team player with experience in dynamic work environments

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering, SysML, MATLAB Stateflow, Systems Analysis
• Familiarity with launch vehicles, spacecraft, and integrated avionics and software

Essential Functions:

Work Environment: General office environment (100%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<10%).

Physical Requirements: Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines: Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions: The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
