This role offers an opportunity to shape and improve engineering software used in the design of metal building systems. You will translate technical requirements into practical software enhancements that streamline engineering workflows, improve productivity, and support operational efficiency. Working closely with engineering specialists, developers, IT teams, drafting professionals, and manufacturing stakeholders, you will help bridge the gap between software capabilities and real-world engineering needs. You will also contribute to user acceptance testing, system validation, and continuous improvement initiatives. This position combines systems engineering, software development, and structural design knowledge in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment. Your work will help reduce lead times, optimize costs, and ultimately improve customer satisfaction.

Accountabilities

As a Systems Engineer I, you will support the development, integration, and maintenance of engineering software while ensuring that system enhancements meet technical and business requirements. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and implement technical solutions within the metal building design system to expand existing capabilities and introduce new features.
  • Analyze engineering workflows to identify opportunities for automation, improve the user experience, and increase software efficiency.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to translate engineering requirements into practical software functionalities and technical specifications.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects to integrate engineering software with enterprise systems and other technical tools.
  • Serve as a liaison between end-users and developers, communicating system needs, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate with Technical Services, IT, Design, Drafting, Manufacturing, and Engineering teams to ensure software solutions align with operational requirements.
  • Design, execute, and document user acceptance tests and other testing procedures for new features, bug fixes, and system updates.
  • Record test cases, results, defects, and identified issues to support system validation and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain technical documentation covering software design decisions, codebase structure, requirements, and change history.
  • Provide technical feedback on proposed engineering changes, system developments, and opportunities to modernize existing platforms.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and improvement of legacy systems while supporting reliable, scalable engineering software.
Requirements

The ideal candidate combines software engineering expertise with an understanding of structural design and engineering workflows. You should be comfortable solving technical problems, managing competing priorities, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The following qualifications are expected:

  • A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • At least two years of building design experience or experience in a related field.
  • Extensive experience in engineering software development and systems engineering, with five or more years in the field and at least one year in a senior or lead role.
  • Strong programming skills, particularly in C# and C++.
  • Knowledge of software architecture, design principles, and the software development lifecycle, including legacy system modernization and platform migrations.
  • Experience working with databases, including SQL Server and Microsoft Access integrations.
  • Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and modern development workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to debug, test, maintain, and improve legacy systems and complex codebases.
  • Experience designing and implementing automated workflows and rule-based systems for engineering calculations.
  • Familiarity with metal building software and technical requirements development is an advantage.
  • Industry experience in metal buildings or construction is a plus.
  • Strong technical documentation, requirements-gathering, system diagramming, and code review skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, with experience working across Engineering, IT, Drafting, Manufacturing, and Technical Services teams, including distributed teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Willingness to learn emerging technologies in engineering software and represent software-related needs in task forces, project reviews, and engineering councils.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.
