Job summary

Outpost seeks a Systems Engineer to keep the physical systems behind our platform running in the field — kiosks, edge compute, networking, power, cameras, and access control. You will own uptime across the deployed fleet, troubleshoot hardware, run acceptance testing with manufacturers, and build tools to deploy a kiosk from crate to live.

The role involves on-site work at Austin, TX or nearby time zones, with travel to launches and on-call rotation.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in systems engineering, field engineering, edge infrastructure, IT infrastructure, or a similar hands-on role supporting production hardware in the field.
  • Hands-on experience with Ubuntu or other Linux-based systems, including remote access, log review, and command-line troubleshooting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot across hardware, firmware, operating systems, networks, and applications to isolate root causes.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet networking, IP addressing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, and cellular connectivity.
  • Understanding of PoE, power supplies, UPS, and recovery from power interruptions.
  • Experience supporting fleets of remote, unattended, or distributed systems, including remote monitoring and alerting.
  • Experience with IP cameras and access control hardware—installation, configuration, and calibration.
  • Scripting to automate configuration and provisioning tasks (Python, Bash).
  • Experience writing and maintaining technical documentation (interconnect diagrams, network/power docs, runbooks).
  • Willingness to travel to sites and participate in on-call rotation.
  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience with launching new installations and commissioning is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor site uptime and health across the kiosk fleet, and drive patterns behind repeat failures to zero.
  • Troubleshoot hardware in the yard — edge compute, cameras, ID readers, displays, networking, power remotely or on-site when needed.
  • Contribute to kiosk hardware revisions including component/layout changes and power resilience.
  • Own factory acceptance testing with hardware manufacturers and site acceptance testing for new launches.
  • Deliver site-specific solutions, including integrating access-control with customer security/video systems.
  • Build configuration utilities and automation so a kiosk goes from crate to live without a specialist, and maintain comprehensive runbooks and documentation.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and improve monitoring/alerting for field hardware.

Job description

About Us:

Outpost is building the backbone of freight. We’re reinventing how supply chain infrastructure works in America with carrier agnostic truck terminals. As a vertically integrated real estate, operations, and technology company, we acquire and operate mission-critical real estate across the country to serve the largest logistics providers in the world. Backed by $1B from Greenpoint Partners, we’re scaling and building the most valuable logistics network in the country.

We thrive on accountability, integrity, and a shared drive to raise the bar. If you’re excited to reshape the industry alongside a high-performance team with a championship mindset that executes relentlessly, welcome aboard.

Role Summary:

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to keep the physical systems behind our platform running in the field — kiosks, edge compute, networking, power, cameras, and access control — and to make each new site launch faster and more repeatable than the last. Our site footprint is growing quickly, and when our system goes down, trucks stop moving and a customer’s yard stops running. This is a hands-on role: you will own uptime across the deployed fleet, troubleshoot hardware in the yard, run acceptance testing with our manufacturers and at new sites, integrate our access-control platform with customer security systems, and build the tooling and documentation that let a kiosk go from crate to live without a specialist on site. This position reports to Michael Sewell, Senior System Engineer.

Location: Austin, TX (preferred) | Open to candidates in the Central or Eastern time zones

This role is ideally based in our Austin office, where we value in-person collaboration. However, we're open to considering candidates based in the Central or Eastern time zones who are a strong fit for the role.

Our stack: Ubuntu · NVIDIA Jetson · Industrial PCs and Edge Compute · Tailscale · Teltonika · Hanwha Cameras · Mercury Access Control

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor site uptime and health across the kiosk fleet, and drive the patterns behind repeat failures to zero;

  • Troubleshoot hardware in the yard — edge compute, cameras, ID readers, displays, networking, power, enclosure — remotely where possible and on-site when it isn’t;

  • Contribute to the next kiosk hardware revisions: component and layout changes, downstream impact on enclosure and access-control hardware, and power resilience including UPS sizing and failover;

  • Own factory acceptance testing with our hardware manufacturers and site acceptance testing for new site launches;

  • Deliver site-specific solutions, including integrating our access-control platform with customer-operated security and video management systems;

  • Build configuration utilities and automation so a kiosk goes from crate to live without a specialist, and maintain the kiosk documentation — interconnect, network, power, accessories — plus on-call runbooks; and

  • Participate in an on-call rotation, and help improve monitoring and alerting for field hardware.

Qualifications:
  • 3+ years in systems engineering, field engineering, edge infrastructure, IT infrastructure, or a similar hands-on role supporting production hardware in the field;

  • Hands-on experience supporting Ubuntu or other Linux-based systems, including remote access, log review, and command-line troubleshooting;

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot across hardware, firmware, operating systems, networks, and applications, and to isolate a root cause rather than swap parts until it works;

  • Working knowledge of Ethernet networking, IP addressing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, and cellular connectivity;

  • Practical understanding of PoE, power supplies, power distribution, UPS and backup power, and recovery from power interruptions and brownouts;

  • Experience supporting fleets of remote, unattended, or distributed systems, including remote monitoring, alerting, and recovery;

  • Experience with IP cameras and access control hardware — installation, configuration, aiming, and calibration;

  • Scripting ability sufficient to automate configuration and provisioning tasks (Python, Bash, or similar);

  • Experience writing and maintaining technical documentation — interconnect and wiring diagrams, network and power documentation, installation standards, and runbooks;

  • Willingness to travel to sites for launches, installations, and escalations, and to participate in an on-call rotation;

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams, including Field Operations and customer-side IT and security staff;

  • Experience with factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, or commissioning new installations a plus;

  • Experience integrating with customer-operated video management or security systems (Genetec, Milestone, Avigilon, Verkada, or similar) a plus;

  • Experience with NVIDIA Jetson, industrial PCs, single-board computers, or other edge compute platforms a plus;

  • Experience with Tailscale, Teltonika, Ubiquiti, or comparable remote access and networking equipment a plus;

  • Experience with kiosks, machine vision, industrial automation, or IoT systems a plus; and

  • Experience with equipment deployed outdoors or in semi-controlled environments, including enclosures, mounting, and thermal considerations a plus.

Benefits:
  • Title Commensurate with Experience

  • Comprehensive Benefits Package including Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance

  • 401(k) Retirement Plan Matching

  • 18 Paid Holidays

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Friday Team Lunches
