As a Systems Development Engineer in the AWS Direct Connect capacity engineering team, you will work hand-in-hand with Software Development and Network Engineering teams to develop solution architectures, while also helping to automate and invent new ways of operating the Direct Connect network. You’ll apply your large-scale understanding of computing solutions to write code and manage services that delight our customers. You will practice frugality through economic decision making.

The AWS Direct Connect capacity engineering team invent solutions that makes it easy for customers to establish a dedicated network connection from their premises to the AWS cloud. These connections help to reduce network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections. AWS Direct Connect is currently available in more than 91 locations located in 28 countries.

Key job responsibilities

You will be responsible for the design, implementation and quality of services you deliver. Your experience working in a systems development or in an enterprise environment will help us implement automated solutions across a variety of applications and systems. You’ll also:

  1. Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.
  2. Write high quality distributed system software.
  3. Work in an agile, startup-like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff.
  4. Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
  5. Use your strong problem-solving skills, ability to understand and scope solutions, work across teams to drive solutions.
  6. Contribute to documentation of process and procedures.
  7. Learn from others and help grow those in your team to achieve their best.
  8. Take ownership, consider tradeoffs and lean on your expertise to ensure the job gets done.
  9. Participate in an on-call rotation with your team.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby
- 1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
- Experience utilizing AWS cloud solutions in a DevOps environment
- Knowledge of database systems and SQL

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
